Ault seniors show thanks to management, HUD representatives ...Saudi Arabia

Ault residents couldn’t say “thank you” enough to those who prioritized much-needed repairs and upkeep at their senior housing facility.

That’s why the seniors decided to express their gratitude through a universal language: food.

In April, Leslie Schleiger moved into Villa Fourteen, a senior living facility with 36 units in Ault, which offers Housing and Urban Development-subsidized apartments. The facility includes an outdoor space and a community center for social gatherings.

Upon moving in, Schleiger instantly wanted to become more involved in the Villa Fourteen community, joining forces with other passionate and proactive residents. The group began discussions around how to make their community more livable, honing in on pressing repairs and desired improvements.

Schleiger said the residents rallied together to “politely push” for this from Inspire Residential, the facility’s management company, which completed an inspection. Around the same time, the Department of Housing and Urban Development requested to do an inspection.

In preparation for the inspection, management made long-overdue repairs, including gutter cleaning and lawn maintenance, like weed removal. After the department’s visit, additional maintenance needs were added to the list, including a new air conditioning unit in the community center.

Susan Converse, a senior resident, came up with the idea to show appreciation for Housing and Urban Development and Inspire Residential by hosting a breakfast, according to Schleiger. Many seniors joined in on the efforts led by Converse, who made breakfast burritos, by bringing drinks, flowers and good company to the occasion.

Representatives from Inspire Residential, Villa Fourteen and Housing and Urban Development attended the event alongside the grateful and tight-knit community members. The seniors hoped the breakfast would facilitate connections and improve communication between all parties.

“We wanted everybody to … understand that we appreciated all those efforts and that they are trying to make a nice place for us to live,” Schleiger said.

Schleiger wanted to paint seniors in a positive light during a time when news about the aging population focuses on the downsides. On top of making sure thier voices are still heard, the breakfast showcased that the friendly faces who live at Villa Fourteen like to give back and stay active in the community, Schleiger said.

“Sometimes I think that gets lost,” she added. “We are a real community here.”
