‘It’s soul-destroying’ – inside the mess at Super League’s most troubled club ...Middle East

Red Devils players and staff have had their wages paid late for several months, while the club has been forced to compete under a sustainability cap that limits their spending on players to £1.2m, compared to the Super League’s salary cap of £2.1m. Eight of Salford’s stars have now departed.

A partner of a Red Devils player, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the unsettled situation that continues as “soul-destroying” for the mental health of the players and their families.

“Nobody knows where they stand. The players that have wanted to leave are stuck, they’re trapped. The club won’t let them go.

“It’s a salary-capped sport, other teams don’t necessarily have the space or, if they do, they’re not going to offer the same contract.

“Obviously a lot of blame is going onto the [previous] ownership group and rightly so, that is where it should go. But it’s not been handled correctly by those left behind either.”

“This has been our lives for the past nine months and there’s no signs of this ending,” she said.

“In the early days it was do we even have enough players? There were people playing busted [injured]. You don’t want to go into a game with a team that you know are not capable.

“There’s no communication. There’s no ownership accountability, responsibility taken by anyone at Salford. They literally don’t have a CEO. We’re just left in the dark.

The partner said players have learnt of new developments at the club through the media and slammed the Rugby Football League (RFL) for their lack of support and information.

“The RFL are just not interested in any of it. They’re just useless. Why did they impose a sustainability cap?

“I’m just not convinced that actually the RFL has thought any of this through.”

“The RFL’s stated priority has been to do all possible to support the club through their financial problems, with the goal of starting and completing the 2025 Betfred Super League season.

Expectation is growing within the sport that Super League will expand to 14 teams next year, with Salford dropping out of the top flight. But there has yet to be confirmation from the RFL on how the competition will look in 2026.

“You see all this in the media but there’s no official confirmation so the panic sets in all again. Nobody can plan for the future. What are we supposed to do?

The club told The i Paper: “The funding from the takeover has taken much longer than initially anticipated, the impact of the changes and prolonged uncertainty for all employees of the club and their families has been emotionally tough.

“We are proud of and humbled by everyone at the club for their resilience and professionalism during these tough times.”
