User Experience

Full disclosure, I wasn’t familiar with TCL prior to testing out this door lock. I also have to admit that opening the lock with a wave of my hand sounded like it could be a scam, but after installing this lock — which was very easy — and utilizing the palm reader, I can say that I hope to always have this type of lock in the future. We’ve been using HomeKey technology with our locks over the past couple of years and while it works, it can be inconsistent and a little slow when in use. So far, the TCL D2 Pro has read our palms every single time and it’s nearly instantaneous. Here’s a closer look at the set-up.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The TCL D2 Pro Palm Vein Smart Lock arrived in a clean, well-organized package that immediately gave off a premium feel. Inside the box, I found the main lock body (exterior and interior assemblies), two physical keys, a rechargeable lithium battery pack, the installation hardware kit, a mounting plate, a Type-C charging cable, and a detailed instruction manual. Everything was clearly labeled and securely packed, which made the unboxing process simple.

Setup and Installation

Installing the D2 Pro was surprisingly easy. I’ve worked with a few other smart locks in the past, and some required more drilling or modification of the door than expected. This one, however, came with a straightforward mounting template and all the necessary screws and tools. Since I was replacing a lock, there was no need to drill out the deadbolt.

The first step in the process was to remove the existing lock. Then, I placed the latch bolt into the latch hole and secured it with the supplied screws. Once that’s in place, you run the connector cable from the exterior assembly under the latch and connect the mounting plate to it on the interior of the door using the supplied screws. Next, you’ll connect the wire to the interior assembly and attach that assembly to the mounting plate. Finally you’ll install the battery.

Once the hardware was installed, pairing the lock with the TCL Smart Home app was straightforward. The app smoothly guided me through setting up different access methods, like the palm vein scanner, fingerprint reader, PIN codes, and remote unlocking via Wi-Fi. The palm vein enrollment process was particularly quick and easy, taking only a few seconds per user.

Testing and Daily Use

Using the D2 Pro in everyday scenarios has been a smooth experience. The palm vein scanner worked consistently, even in different lighting conditions. You just hold your hand over the reader — located at the top of the lock’s keypad — and the door makes a chime noise letting you know your palm has been read. Both of my palms are programmed as well as my fiance’s. Neither of us have had any issues with unlocking the door using that method.

There are six different ways to unlock the D2 Pro.

Palm Vein Fob (not included) Keypad Keys App Control Voice Control (Amazon Alexa or Google Home) Keys

I have codes set up and of course the palm vein, but I don’t have the optional fob (card). The instruction manual states that it’s a separate purchase. I actually wish it had been included as that would have been an easy add to my keychain. The app is responsive as a locking/unlocking mechanism, but you do have to press/hold the lock/unlock control. This is also true of the button on the lock’s keypad. While this is a little inconvenient when you are in a rush, the lock designer stated that the reason for the press/hold function is so that there aren’t accidental button presses.

The lock responds quickly to app commands, and I appreciated being able to check access logs and assign temporary codes to visiting friends. Another feature I truly appreciate is the rechargeable battery pack. The specs state it has an 8 month lifespan when fully charged. It came with about 60% battery charge right out of the box. Overall, the TCL D2 Pro has been reliable, easy to use, and genuinely enjoyable to interact with on a daily basis. And the palm vein technology is good enough to make us switch from a HomeKit-compatible lock.

Conclusion

The TCL D2 Pro Palm Vein Smart Lock impressed me from the start with its unique biometric technology, but it was the daily ease of use, simple installation, and consistent performance that made it a real standout. Having tested several smart locks in the past, I can say that this one delivered one of the smoothest and most reliable user experiences I’ve had to date. The palm vein scanning is accurate and fast, setup was refreshingly easy, and I love that it comes with multiple access options to fit different needs. While it would have been nice for the fob to be included, the lock offers a level of innovation and practicality that makes it worth considering for anyone looking to upgrade their home security system.
