ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Flower City Union is gearing up for the postseason after finishing first in the National Premier Soccer League’s Great Lakes Division. The team secured eight wins, one draw, and one loss in 10 games, outscoring opponents 31-8.
Flower City will face the fourth-seeded Erie Commodores on Wednesday. The Union previously defeated Erie in their first game of the year, but both teams have evolved since then.
Head Coach Jordan Sullivan expressed pride in the team’s regular season championship. “So just to see them enjoy that win and sort of finish top of the seeding was really nice to see [for] these guys. And it’s a first in club history, so we’re very proud of that,” Sullivan said.
Gaven Egan, a Churchville native, acknowledged the changes in both teams since their initial matchup. “They’re not going to be the same team that we played at the beginning of the season. Just like we’re not the same team that they played at the beginning of the season,” Egan said. “So I think we need to watch some of their games from more recent, but really just focus on ourselves and do what we need to do.”
Assistant Coach Ibrahim Kapidzic praised the team’s development. “I don’t think there’s words that we can fathom to express how the team’s built. We had a month, two months to build the team, and we were able to put these boys together and create something special this year,” Kapidzic said.
The NPSL is part of the fourth tier of the U.S. soccer pyramid. Flower City will play Erie at Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Meanwhile, three-seeded Rochester New York FC will travel to Malone University to take on Ambassadors FC at the same time in Ohio, with each game’s winner advancing to the Great Lakes Championship.
The championship game, set for Saturday, will be held at the highest remaining seed. The winner will claim the Great Lakes Conference title and advance to play the Midwest Division.
