Caitlin Clark has been told to go it alone after a recent All-Star ‘snub’.
The WNBA superstar, who is currently sidelined with a groin injury, has been announced as a captain for the 2025 exhibition game.
Clark has been told to leave the WNBA after an All-Star snubGettyClark received an incredible 1,293,526 fan votes — more than any other player in the league — and will now get to pick her roster for All-Star weekend later this month.
But while the Indiana Fever guard led in fan voting, it soon emerged that she was only ranked the ninth-best of her position by her peers.
That led to outrage in the media, with many analysts suggesting she had been snubbed by her fellow pros.
Dick Vitale of ESPN took to social media to suggest that some in the WNBA are ‘jealous’ of Clark, and proclaimed that she was the best thing to happen to women’s basketball.
“I feel strongly that various players don’t give Caitlin Clark the respect she deserves,” Vitale later told Front Office Sports, doubling down on his claims.
“What she has done to help the WNBA has been unbelievable.
“Think about it. PR excitement. Ticket sales. TV Ratings and interest. Salary increases. More charter flights than the past.
“Plus, she is so exciting to watch. Lots of jealousy.”
While Vitale made his stance on Clark and her impact clear, others have gone even further, with OutKick founder Clay Travis renewing calls for her to ditch the WNBA entirely.
“Caitlin Clark is the golden goose, every game she is dropping golden eggs,” he said in a video shared last month.
Some media figures have called for Clark to create her own breakaway leagueGetty“They are trying to strangle the golden goose to death. There’s jealousy, there’s hate.
“Everyone seems to hate the fact that Caitlin Clark is making the league relevant.
“If I were advising Caitlin Clark, I would say start your own pro basketball league for women.
“I don’t know how she benefits from the WNBA at all.”
Captioning his video, Travis concluded that Clark is ‘worth more than entire WNBA’.
He is also not the first person to argue that the Fever star should form her own breakaway league, with Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy suggesting the same.
Clark has been sidelined by two different injuries so far this seasonGetty Portnoy is one of many who believes Clark deserves better than the WNBAGettyAmid all the noise that has surrounded Clark in recent weeks, the star herself will likely be fully focused on getting back on the court.
She has missed Indiana’s last five games, having already sat out a further five earlier in the season because of a left quad strain.
While Clark is being assessed day-to-day, Fever head coach Stephanie White has made clear that the 23-year-old will only return when she is back to full fitness.
“I think the biggest thing is she stated she’s not a fan of minutes restrictions,” White said of Clark, ahead of last Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks, which Indiana lost 87-89.
“If there’s going to be a minutes restriction, maybe we’ll hold her another game.
“It’s evaluating her again in the morning… and making a decision from there.”
After a tight loss to the Sparks, Indiana are now 9-9 on the season, and will continue to sweat over Clark’s availability.
The organization has not yet confirmed her status for their next game, against the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday.
