U.S. envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, said on Monday, July 7, that dialogue between Syria and Israel has begun, while Syria’s state-run news agency reported that President Ahmad al-Sharaa arrived in the United Arab Emirates.
In a press conference held in Beirut following his meeting with the Lebanese president on Monday, Thomas Barrack explained that the new Syrian government, which came to power last year after the fall of Iran’s ally Bashar al-Assad, is now opening dialogue with Israel.
Transitional Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa also arrived in the United Arab Emirates today on an official visit, according to the state-run SANA news agency, which did not clarify the reasons for the visit or the issues to be discussed.
Journalist Firas Dalati reported on Facebook that shortly before Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa arrived at Abu Dhabi airport, a plane from Tel Aviv landed there.
He noted that the aircraft frequently travels between Tel Aviv and regional capitals on an almost daily basis and is believed to be linked to Israeli intelligence.
Activists have drawn connections between al-Sharaa’s visit and the arrival of the Israeli aircraft in the UAE, particularly in light of the U.S. envoy to Syria’s statements about the beginning of dialogue between the two countries.
Prior Developments
On June 27, Israel’s public broadcaster reported that the White House is seeking to expand the Abraham Accords to include Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Lebanon, following the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Iran.
At the time, U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack said the current Syrian administration is quietly holding discussions with Israel on all matters.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Barrack stated that President Ahmad al-Sharaa’s government does not want war with Israel and called for giving the new Syrian leadership a chance.
On June 25, President al-Sharaa said that efforts were underway to stop Israeli attacks through indirect negotiations with Israel, mediated by international intermediaries.
The newspaper Israel Hayom reported that Tzachi Hanegbi, head of Israel’s National Security Council, is conducting direct talks between the Syrian government and Israel, suggesting that Syria may be a candidate for joining the normalization agreements.
According to the June 24 report, Hanegbi said during a closed meeting with Knesset members that both Syria and Lebanon are candidates for joining the Abraham Accords.
He added that there is direct communication with Syria at all levels, including with President Ahmad al-Sharaa, contradicting earlier claims of indirect talks.
During the meeting on June 22, Hanegbi confirmed that he is personally leading the discussions, focusing on security and political coordination.
Regarding a potential withdrawal from the buffer zone with Syria, Hanegbi stated, “If normalization happens, we will consider it.”
