The Denver Broncos are heading into training camp for the first time in forever with a quarterback who is the solidified man for the job. How can Bo Nix continue to take steps forward in his second season and are the QB roles established on this training camp roster?
Denver Broncos Training Camp Preview: Bo Nix leads QB room
Last year, Bo Nix was battling with Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson for the starting quarterback gig under Sean Payton. He won the job without question, and now he’s heading into his second season in Payton’s system and is aiming to help the Broncos offense explode onto the scene in 2025.
Outlook of the Denver Broncos QB room
With Nix leading the way, the Broncos have two other quarterbacks on the roster. Jarrett Stidham is the solidified backup quarterback behind Nix after he re-signed with the team in free agency, agreeing to terms on a two-year, $12M deal that features $7M guaranteed.
This pretty much indicates that he’s the backup, and it’s not even a question.
Sam Ehlinger joined the Broncos this offseason as a free agent addition, signing a one-year deal. While he was solid during the team’s offseason program, it doesn’t seem likely this season that the Broncos will keep three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster when it’s all said and done.
Ehlinger will likely be a favorite to return as the team’s practice squad quarterback after roster cuts.
Biggest question at quarterback
The biggest question at quarterback this season is whether or not Bo Nix can avoid a sophomore slump. While a slump is always possible, the Broncos’ offseason upgrades and additions, and continued emphasis on player development with a handful of skill players, make me confident he won’t.
Payton and the Broncos are building around Nix. Contextually, slumps typically occur when personnel around a quarterback are injured or aren’t producing. If the Broncos’ offense finally has an effective run game, that will help Nix avoid any type of slump because he won’t necessarily have all of the pressure on him to produce for the offense solely, the way he did for a large portion of his rookie season.
Having skill players like Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims, Troy Franklin, Devaughn Vele, Pat Bryant, RJ Harvey, J.K. Dobbins, and Evan Engram are nice on paper and if these players stay healthy, Nix should have a bigger sophomore campaign.
