Former Wolves and Bournemouth boss Gary O’Neil also has admirers among the Leicester hierarchy but that appointment looks less likely at this stage.

Wilder was sacked by Sheffield United after their Championship play-off final defeat to Sunderland.

Leicester director of football John Rudkin has also met with Sean Dyche while Danny Rohl would be a candidate depending on the outcome of his contact termination discussions with Sheffield Wednesday.

Prior to leaving Bramall Lane, Wilder’s second spell at the helm had lasted 18 months.

He returned to the Blades in December 2023, with the club battling against relegation from the Premier League.

Despite failing to avoid the drop, he remained in charge last season.

However, United missed out on automatic promotion by 10 points as they finished third behind Leeds and Burnley.

They were then beaten by the Black Cats following a last minute winner at Wembley Stadium in May.

Wilder has since been replaced in the dugout by former Hull manager Ruben Selles.

Meanwhile, O’Neil has yet to return to management since leaving Wolves in December.

He was previously in contention for the Norwich job before Liam Manning was hired from Bristol City.

O’Neil also emerged as a candidate to succeed Wilder at United but ultimately missed out on the role.

As for the Foxes, they parted company with Van Nistelrooy last month following their relegation from the Premier League.

Just six league wins saw Leicester finish 18th last term, 13 points from top-flight survival.

They are set to begin their Championship return at home to Wednesday on August 10.

Ahead of that fixture, the Foxes played their opening friendly of pre-season on Saturday.

Coach Andy King took charge of the side at their training ground as they faced League One Peterborough.

A brace from Louis Page and Silko Thomas’ late strike secured a 3-1 victory for the Foxes.
