Moon, also called the Buck Moon, will occur on July 10, 2025. This full moon, the first of astronomical summer, is named for the frequent North American thunderstorms during this period. Some also refer to it as the Hay Moon, due to the hay-making season. Native American names for this full moon include the Salmon Moon, Raspberry Moon, and Berry Moon, all signifying the bounty of nature at this time of year.
The full moon is not out of the ordinary but is recognized as a notable point in the natural cycle of the year. July’s full moon is called the Thunder Moon because of its timing with frequent summer thunderstorms.
Alaska, Native American communities dubbed the event Salmon Moon because it coincides with the timing of salmon run.
Stargazers can expect between 15 and 20 meteors an hour especially in dark-sky locations, but you'll need to be up after midnight to see them.
While they're best viewed from the southern hemisphere, observers in the northern hemisphere should still catch a decent show.
They are believed to originate from Comet 96P/Machholz, a short-period comet that orbits the Sun every five years.
The meteors tend to be faint, so darker skies will enhance visibility, especially around the new Moon on 24 July when it could also be possible to see parts of the Milky Way.
Buck Moon will also be the farthest full moon from the sun because Earth's orbit of the sun is slightly elliptical. On July 3, Earth was at aphelion, its farthest point from the sun on its orbital path. Since the next full moon is on the side of Earth facing away from the sun, it is the farthest full moon of the year.
On its scheduled appearance, the Thunder Moon will rise in the southeastern sky and remain visible throughout the evening until it sets in the southwest . Enthusiasts are encouraged to seek locations with unobstructed views of both horizons to fully appreciate this lunar spectacle. Observing this celestial phenomenon not only enriches our understanding of lunar cycles but also enhances our connection with natural rhythms that govern seasonal changes .
