CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – As the Fourth of July celebrations have concluded, local fireworks stands have wrapped up their sales for the season. This year, sellers faced challenges due to increasing tariffs on fireworks, which are predominantly manufactured in China.

James Young, owner of Young Explosives in Canandaigua, said tariffs forced him to halt deliveries at one point. He estimated that 90% of fireworks in the U.S. are made in China.

Jason Guck, owner of Barely Legal Fireworks in Monroe County, shared his experiences dealing with corporate competition. He said he relies on his experience to undercut corporate prices, even though tariffs affected those prices this year, leading to fewer customers.

“We want our customers to see what they’re buying. It’s why they can come in, they can scan the products on the TV, and they can see what they do before they even buy them,” said Guck. “Because we want them to have the ultimate experience here at Barely Legal Fireworks. And with that being said, we anticipate for competition, we adjust our pricing, and it’s inevitable,” he said.

Guck said his sales remained consistent with previous years. However, Young expressed concerns that next year might see a more significant impact from tariffs on fireworks sales.

Yesterday marked the last day of legal fireworks sales in New York. New Year’s celebration fireworks sales will begin at the end of December.
