Pro Football Focus’s Max Chadwick has named Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt as the second best returning starter at his position.
He’s listed only behind Clemson’s Cade Klubnik.
Leavitt, returning for his third season of college football and his second at ASU, comes back to lead the Sun Devils with higher expectations going into the 2025 season.
The 20-year-old quarterback will look to continue his successful collegiate campaign after throwing 24 touchdown passes and only six interceptions in 2024. Leavitt also threw for 2885 yards, while completing 61.7 percent of his passes.
Leavitt returns as “the only Power Four signal caller with 80, 0-plus grades as both a passer and runner,” Chadwick said.
After spending one season at Michigan State, Leavitt transferred to Arizona State and helped the Sun Devils go from back-to-back 3-9 seasons to winning the Big 12 and making the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
The redshirt freshman’s 89.1 PFF overall grade ranked ninth among FBS quarterbacks, and he was the only Power Four signal-caller with 80,0-plus grades both as a passer and a runner. His 1.1% turnover-worthy play rate ranked fourth among all quarterbacks, and his 34 forced missed tackles on the ground were the fifth most at the position in the Power Four.
With superstar running back Cam Skattebo off to the NFL, there will be even more pressure on Leavitt to carry Arizona State’s offense in 2025.
Leavitt will attempt to create the same success or better than last season. With Skattebo in NFL, the Sun Devils backfield will look a lot different with Kyson Brown returning and highly touted transfer from Army, Kanye Udoh coming in as well.

ASU wide receiver Jordyn Tyson listed third
ASU’s other top-ten returning starter on this list is wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. Tyson, ranked third behind only Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith, who is the top overall returning player at any position, and Alabama’s true sophomore stand out Ryan Williams, according to Chadwick’s rankings.
Tyson and Leavitt come in to the 2025 season as the top quarterback-wide receiver duo in the country, Chadwick added.
Tyson enjoyed a massive breakout year with the Sun Devils, tallying 1,098 yards as a redshirt sophomore. The only returning Power Four receiver who posted more was Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith.
Something clicked for the Colorado transfer in the second half of the season. In Arizona State’s final six games of the regular season, Tyson led the nation with 729 receiving yards and ranked second in the Power Four in yards per route run (4.03). He suffered a shoulder injury in Arizona State’s final regular-season game, which kept him out of the Big 12 title game and the College Football Playoff quarterfinal, the latter of which the Sun Devils lost in double overtime.
Tyson and Leavitt form the best quarterback-receiver combo in college football heading into 2025. If Arizona State is going to repeat as Big 12 champions, it’ll likely be because of those two.
The success of the Sun Devils offense and team as a whole, will hinge heavily on the play of these two players for the upcoming season, as ASU looks to build on their Big 12 Championship and College Football playoff run from 2024.
