England batter Harry Brook has issued a strong warning to India heading into Day 4 of the second Test at Edgbaston, insisting that England are ready to chase down any target, even as the hosts trail by 244 runs and India look poised to bat England out of the contest.
After being reduced to 84/5 early on Day 3, England were rescued by a stunning 303-run partnership between Brook (158) and debutant Jamie Smith (104), giving their team a fighting chance. But a late collapse saw England dismissed for 407 in reply to India’s 587, with Mohammed Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/83) doing the damage.
India then extended their lead to 244 by stumps, reaching 64/1 with KL Rahul unbeaten on 28. With the pitch flattening and a full two days left, India could realistically add 250–300 more runs if they bat through two-and-a-half sessions on Day 4, setting up a target well beyond 500. But Brook isn’t backing down.
“I still think we can win this Test match, to be honest,” Brook told BBC. “Everybody knows we’re going to try and chase whatever they set us. We’ve done it before and we’ll try again. It was nice to spend some time with Smudge [Jamie Smith]. Hopefully we’ve clawed our way back in.”
