EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Most bands break up, but not like this. Theory of Everything, a band created at ROC Star Academy in Rochester, is breaking up not because they don’t like each other anymore. It’s because half of the band just graduated high school.

Their final show is Saturday.

The band has been playing together every week for four years at the ROC Star Academy studio inside The Piano Works in East Rochester.

“How did you come up with the name,” I asked.

Cora Flannery, singer, rising senior Wayne Central: “I think John just said it.”

John Peartree, keyboards, Pittsford Sutherland grad: “We just sort of listed off a lot of names. And I just said ‘Theory of Everything.’ It’s actually a level in a popular video game.”

Vinny Mannella, singer, guitar, Hilton grad: “Isn’t it also a movie?”

John Peartree: “It’s also a movie. It wasn’t really something that was thought out with great length. It was just something I shouted out and everyone seemed to like.”

ROC Star Academy, born out of a rock summer camp by Elvio Fernandes of the band Daughtry, has 200 students, 20 bands and books them in festivals.

Byeol Milligan, bass, rising junior, home schooled: “It just feels like that’s right where I’m supposed to be.”

Reinier deVault, drums, Penfield High grad: “For me it’s very similar to playing a sport. You get a rush of adrenaline. You feel nervous. You feel excited.”

But all good things must end. Theory of Everything plays its final show Saturday night.

“Going to be emotional on that last show?” I asked.

Vinny Mannella: “Oh, 100%. I think I’m going to be bawling like a baby honestly because I have known everybody here for three years.”

Reinier deVault: “No more band, no more shows, no more practices. It’s all going away.”

John Peartree: “It’s been such a routine for three years straight. Breaking a routine is always hard.”

Owen Compisi, guitar, rising junior, McQuaid Jesuit: “Seeing them go is always such a hard thing but there’s also new beginnings that stem from this.”

Byeol Milligan: “For us, for all of us, it’s just going to be such an incredible finale and a great ending for this band.”

Cora Flannery: “Like, this is where I started and broke out of my comfort zone but it’s definitely something that I will carry with me for a long time.”

Theory of Everything plays Saturday night at 7 p.m. at ROC Star Academy at The Piano Works in East Rochester.
