Many San Diegans will flock to the outdoors, especially the beach, for Fourth of July-related festivities, but what does the holiday look like for those who run water sports and activities businesses?

For scuba diving, kayaking and paddle boarding shops, this week is one of the busiest all year. While San Diego’s temperate year-round climate makes it easy to enjoy water sports almost anytime, the summer months are still the busy season.

Kids are out of school, college students are home and tourists make their treks to San Diego, helping fuel local adventure tourism.

“It gets busy, usually end of June, middle of June to maybe August. I think that coincides with summer for most people,” said Cam Pasimio with San Diego Scuba Pros in La Jolla.

Despite a busy week and weekend, the pros won’t be hitting the water on Friday. Normally, San Diego Scuba Pros arrives at La Jolla Cove around 6:30 a.m. and finishes up by 11:30 a.m., to avoid the crowds. As the sun comes up and the temperature rises, beachgoers make their way in, crowding the cove and its available parking.

The busier the cove gets, arguably, the less appealing it is to divers. The farther away divers have to park, the farther they have to lug all their heavy equipment, including weights, wetsuits and air tanks.

July 4th is no exception. Which means that while San Diego Scuba Pros might not be hitting the water on the holiday, the shop has had a busy week leading up to it.

“It’s the busiest week of the year for diving. We don’t work July 4, because it’s too busy,” said Lando Pasimio, San Diego Scuba Pros’ manager. “The first, second, third, fifth, packed,” he continued.

Everyday California rents kayaks, paddleboards, snorkel equipment and surfboards. The store also offers whale watching, kayaking and snorkeling tours. Started in La Jolla in 2008, Everyday California has since expanded to two locations.

“The week of the Fourth of July is consistently one of the busiest weeks of the year for Everyday California and for the adventure tourism industry as a whole,” Christopher Lynch, cofounder and CEO of Everyday California, said in a statement.

But, Everyday California, also in La Jolla, is actually closed on the holiday for public safety reasons. According to Lynch, “with so many people, both locals and tourists, flocking to the beach, this pause allows lifeguards and first responders to do their jobs without added congestion on the water.”

House of Scuba, a scuba store near Pacific Beach, also experiences a surge in business surrounding the patriotic holiday. But it has a unique e-commerce side to its business model, which helps support year-round stability. The Fourth of July surge is, of course, welcomed, but the store does just fine without it, said owner Michael Sween.

The store remains open on July 4th to accommodate the needs of those eager to hit the water.

“So online web sales will drop a lot for the weekend. But in shop, we’ll probably see a bump up in rentals,” Sween said, referring to snorkel and scuba diving rental equipment.
