WORKERS are set to get $420 added to their paychecks due to a July law change.

The rising cost of living has seen lots of workers struggle, and the new law benefits over 800,000 Americans in a state from July 1.

The increase in minimum wage is being seen across 15 states and cities in the US, where the baseline rate has stayed at $7.25 per hour since 2009.

In Oregon, the pay increase is effecting 801,700 workers, which equates to about 9.4% of the workforce in the state.

The minimum wage in Oregon is being increased by 35 cents to $15.05 per hour.

Sebastian Martinez Hickey, analyst for the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), said: “These minimum wage increases will put more money in workers’ pockets, helping many of them and their families make ends meet.

“The average increase in annual wages for a full-time, year-round worker resulting from these minimum wage hikes ranges from $420 in Oregon to $925 in Alaska.”

MORE EXAMPLES

Other major states and cities increasing the minimum wage include Alaska, California, Illinois, Maryland and Washington DC.

In Alaska, the state is increasing the rate by $1.09 to $13 per hour, impacting 19,400 residents, 6.3% of the state’s workforce.

EPI estimates claim that this will increase a worker’s annual paycheck by $925 on average in Alaska.

California is doing something slightly different, and increasing rates differently depending on city.

For example, cities such as Berkeley and San Francisco will have their minimum wages increased to $19.18, while Los Angeles will be moved to just under $18.

Workers in Chicago will receive 40 cents more per hour, bringing up the minimum wage there to $10.60 hourly.

Maryland’s Montgomery County is increasing the rate to $17.65, a rise of 50 cents.

And over in Washington DC, workers will earn 45 cents more per hour, taking the minimum wage to $17.95 an hour.

The EPI estimates that 58% of the Americans benefiting from the pay increases are women.

On top of this, Black and Hispanic workers are set to disproportionately benefit.

Minimum wage has been a point of contention for years among workers, and various advocacy groups have fought for increases.

Even with this raft of recent changes, there are still senators fighting for their workers.

In Missouri and Vermont, two senators introduced a bipartisan bill to increase minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Many establishments are also fighting for its employees to get minimum wage, with one restaurant even charging customers more to help.

One customer was shocked after being charged an additional 18% on his bill as a “Living Wage Fee”.

The explanation on the bill read: “This fee goes directly to staff payroll and provides a living wage to our team.”

This is not a replacement for traditional tipping, either.

The country first enacted a federal minimum wage in 1938 under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

The first federal minimum wage in the US was set during the Great Depression as a means of stabilizing the economy.
