No player ever wants a rollocking from their own mother.

Not even Jordan Henderson.

So when the ex-Liverpool skipper was getting a little too lippy with former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg, he knew exactly how to pop Henderson back in his box.

Clattenburg, who lived in a village near where Henderson’s parents were from in northern England, brandished a red card for the midfielder during Liverpool‘s 3-2 win over Manchester City towards the end of the 2013/14 season.

The red card meant Henderson missed three of Liverpool’s final four games of the season as the Reds let the Premier League title slip from their grasp.

Speaking on the Daily Mail’s Whistleblower podcast, Clattenburg revealed he was later told by Henderson he ‘deserved’ to be sent off and that his mum phoned him about the incident and ‘had gone crazy’.

“I knew then that he had a close relationship with his parents,” Clattenburg said.

“The following season, I was officiating at Bournemouth, it was against Liverpool. I gave a decision – a basic, bread and butter decision – and Jordan absolutely volleyed us.

“It should have been a sending off. It was clear foul language, really hurtful and I should have given a red card.

“I turned around to Jordan and said, ‘I am going to tell your mother what you just said to me when I see her on the weekend.’

“Jordan went white as a sheet and immediately shut up after that.

“I remember thinking, ‘I can’t believe that worked.'”

The dressing-down from his own mother evidently paid off, as the red card Henderson received against City is the only one in his entire career for club and country.

He did receive his marching orders during a 3-0 win for Liverpool over Watford in the 2018/19 season, but that was because he picked up two yellow cards.

Over the course of Henderson’s career, he has accumulated 77 yellow cards for club and ten for country.

Eleven of those came last season for Ajax, the most he has ever picked up in a single season across all competitions.

As a result of the yellow cards collected, Henderson missed one Eredivisie and one Europa League clash through suspension.

Although it was a crushing season for Henderson and Ajax given they let the league title slip from their grasp, he earned a recall to the Three Lions under Thomas Tuchel.

Omitted from England’s Euro 2024 squad, Tuchel wiped the slate clean and allowed Henderson a chance to prove his case for inclusion ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Despite grumbling from fans regarding the 34-year-old being brought back into the fold, Tuchel believes Henderson still has plenty to offer beyond his invaluable experience.

“He is still lean, he is still fit,” Tuchel told talkSPORT in June.

“He is still ready to push on a level that matches international level. I am convinced he is still ambitious.

“He pushes the group, he takes care of training, he takes care of the attitude, he brings actually players together.

“So we see different better versions of players when Jordan is in camp than if he is not in camp, and that is all I can say.”
