Paul Finebaum made an interesting claim about former Florida and Auburn quarterback Cam Newton on an episode of ‘First Take’ this week.
Finebaum appeared on the show to defend his take that Arch Manning is the best college quarterback since Tim Tebow. ESPN’s Kevin Clark pointed out that Tebow may not have been the best quarterback on his own team back in 2008 as Newton, a future Heisman Trophy winner, was on that Florida team as well.
Suffice it to say Finebaum didn’t agree with the notion that Newton was a better college QB than Tebow. But he took it a step further, recounting a conversation he says he had with former Florida and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer.
“I actually covered Cam Newton at Auburn,” Finebaum said. “I was actually quite aware of why he left the University of Florida. You might call Urban Meyer, he’d be happy to to tell you, because he told me, that Cam Newton is the worst guy he has ever dealt with in his college career.
“Now, that’s saying a great deal considering some of the 30-for-30s that have been done on a few of his other players.”

— Grant (@NMDgrant) July 2, 2025Newton left Florida in 2008 after he was arrested for allegedly stealing another student’s laptop. He was also reportedly facing academic expulsion following multiple cheating allegations. Newton then transferred to Blinn College before arriving at Auburn in 2010 for one legendary season with the Tigers.
However, as Finebaum alluded to, it’s been well-documented that Meyer’s Florida program produced multiple players with serious off-the-field issues. Most notably, former Florida tight end Aaron Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2015.
Meyer is no longer coaching but is a mainstay on FOX’s college football coverage and is a co-host on The Triple Option podcast alongside Rob Stone and Mark Ingram. It will be interesting to see if Meyer publicly responds to Finebaum’s comments in the coming days.
