FAIRFIELD – An attorney who once served on elected and appointed Oakland boards has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle contraband into the Solano County Jail.
Christopher Dobbins, 53, was arrested on June 20 and booked into jail after an investigation by the Solano County Sheriff’s Office’s gang intelligence unit and investigations bureau, authorities said.
Dobbins did not answer or immediately return a call or text seeking comment on Monday evening.
Solano County Sheriff Thomas A. Ferrara, in a statement issued Monday, did not describe the contraband Dobbins’ is alleged to have brought into the jail, but said it was “intercepted before it could be distributed within the facility.” The investigation is ongoing, he wrote.
“This operation underscores our zero-tolerance policy for any attempts to undermine the integrity of our justice system,” Ferrara said in the statement. “We commend the diligent work of our Gang Intelligence Unit, Investigations Bureau, and Sheriff’s Enforcement Team in swiftly addressing this serious breach.”
Dobbins was an elected member of the Oakland Unified School Board, when in 2007 he refused his board colleagues’ call for him to resign after an internal investigation found he had been inappropriate with a 17-year-old girl. He left the school board in 2014.
Dobbins also served as an appointed member of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Joint Powers Authority, which at the time oversaw the publicly owned complex where the A’s, Raiders and Warriors played.
He has faced discipline from the California State Bar since becoming a lawyer in 2008, including suspension of his license in 2020. The 2020 suspension involved Dobbins lying to a judge about his client waiving his right to a speedy preliminary hearing, then admitting to the falsehood at a later court date. The result was prosecutors dismissing an attempted murder case against an Oakland man, but later re-filing it, though it was ultimately dismissed due to insufficient evidence in 2021, court records show.
