‘Come on, Ollie!’ – I’m British qualifier ranked No.733 but stunned Wimbledon on debut and could face Carlos Alcaraz ...Middle East

The ‘Come on, Ollie!’ chants grew louder and louder with each powerful point.

Oliver Tarvet won the last one, finished off fellow qualifier Leandro Riedi in straight sets, then pumped his fist before saluting the crowd that kept calling his name.

The Wimbledon crowd love nothing more than a British winner, and on a scorching Monday at the All England Club, a 21-year-old qualifier from Hertfordshire became one of the hottest early names in the 2025 tournament.

Tarvet is ranked No. 733 in the world – the British No.33 – and entered the first round with just $15,431 in career prize money having powered his way through qualifying.

After dispatching Riedi 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4, Tarvet’s next reward could be facing men’s No. 2 seed and Wimbledon defending men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz in the second round.

First round victory means Tarvet – who is part of the US collegiate system and attends San Diego State – would bank at least £99,000, but is unable to claim most of it due to his status as an amateur.

All that mattered for Tarvet was his perfect world drenched in sunshine and cheers on Court 4.

Fans began packing the small viewing areas as the third and final set became his.

After upsetting world No. 144 Alexander Blockx 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the final round of qualifying last Thursday, Tarvet followed up his first best-of-five match with a first-round triumph in his Wimbledon debut.

He nailed serve after serve, then kept lowering his 6ft 1in and 195 lb frame to dig into the grass and set up brilliant cross-court returns.

“Good serve. Come on, Ollie!” yelled a courtside fan, as Tarvet collected another point.

Cameras and cellphones were raised as the final serve waited.

Tarvet smoothly finished off his first-round opposition, and saluted the SW19 crowd that supported him on the first day of Wimbledon.

“There’s a lot of emotions, but the main one is just happiness,” Tarvet told the BBC, after reaching the prestigious tournament as a little-known qualifier.

“Ever since I was a little kid, it’s been my dream.”

Tarvet grew up idolizing Rafael Nadal and initially didn’t want to leave his hometown to further his tennis training.

Now he’s a straight-set Court 4 winner, and waiting for his next opponent in Wimbledon’s second round.

If Alcaraz does his job on Monday afternoon on Centre Court, Tarvet’s Wimbledon dream is only just beginning.
