With a minimum of 20 places up for grabs for an place in the main draw at Royal Portrush in July, fans could well see Poulter Senior and Junior thwart each other’s bids.
And it’s fair to say a trip to the prestigious Northern Irish course would be just as significant for both father and son.
Ryder Cup hero Ian has not made a major start since 2022, where he finished tied-for-62nd at the Open.
Having joined the breakaway LIV Golf Series in the same year, the older Poulter has seen his ranking take a hit as a result.
Currently ranked 1877th in the world, the 49-year-old’s attempts at making golf’s biggest events in recent years have been heavily impacted by LIV Golf not offering Official World Golf Ranking points.
And while he could secure a 56th major championship appearance by reaching this year’s Open, it would be a totally different story for son Luke should he emerge victorious in qualifying.
He has never featured in a major before, having narrowly missed out in his attempt to qualify for the US Open.
The University of Florida sophomore featured in final qualifying in early June.
After finishing ten-under-par after 36 holes, Luke found himself tied for fourth and the final qualifying spot.

And his father later revealed that he would have caddied for his son at Oakmont had he made it.
Speaking on talkSPORT’s Hawksbee & Jacobs show, Poulter Sr said: “Unfortunately he didn’t make it, but I was actually going to caddie for him in the US Open.
“It would have been wonderful. Truly would have been amazing.
“So hopefully he can get in a Major in the next few years and my legs are still strong enough to carry a bag for 18 holes for him.”
And Ian may soon have to deliver on this promise should his son pip him to Open qualification.
Ian Poulter has been on the winning side in five Ryder Cup tournamentsLuke certainly looks set for a bright future, having recovered well after fracturing part of his back last year.
The 21-year-old is currently ranked 51st in the world amateur standings, and has won two collegiate events in 2025.
It’s fair to say he would do well to follow in his father’s footsteps, who has enjoyed a hugely successful 30 years in professional golf.
As well as winning three PGA Tour events, Poulter Sr has impressed on the major stage.
He came tied-for-third at the 2012 PGA Championship, as well as finishing as runner-up at the 2008 Open.
And the English golf star will now be looking to add one more appearance to his 20 previous outings at the Open, as he vies for a spot in the main draw in Portrush, which will take place between 17-20 July.
