WEBSTER, N.Y. — A shooting in Idaho on Sunday shares some striking similarities to the 2012 shooting in Webster that left two firefighters dead and shook the region and nation.
In Idaho, police say a man started a wildfire and began shooting at first responders at Canfield Mountain, near the city of Coeur d’Alene. The ambush killed two firefighters and wounded a third. Authorities later found the suspect’s body in the woods.
In Webster, a man intentionally set his house and car on fire and ambushed first responders on Christmas Eve nearly 13 years ago. That ambush killed two volunteers with the West Webster Fire Department, 19-year-old Tomasz Kaczowka and 43-year-old Mike Chiapperini. Both had just stepped out of their trucks to battle the fire.
A Greece Police officer and two other firefighters were also injured in the ambush. Every year on Christmas Eve, the community comes together at a memorial on Lake Road to remember the service of the first responders. News10NBC spoke to community members as they were helping to clean the memorial.
“We should honor our first responders. While we’re running away from incidents, they’re running toward the incident to protect all of us and it’s our duty to show how much we appreciate what they do for us,” Dave Lippa said.
The Webster shooter took his own life. Investigators are currently working to determine if the Idaho gunman also died by suicide.
The Webster shooting took place during the same month as the Sandy Hook mass school shooting in Newton, Connecticut.
