DENVER (KDVR) — A traffic stop on Tuesday, June 17, led police to find items that are not commonly found during such incidents.
According to the Denver Police Department, officers with the Denver Auto Theft Task Force were near West 13th Avenue and North Meade Street when they saw an SUV without license plates. The intersection is near Paco Sanchez Park in Denver's Mar Lee neighborhood.
Loveland police chief discusses ATF search of license plate cameras with ICE subject lineAs the vehicle moved through northwest Denver, the officers surveilled it until it parked in the area of West 23rd Avenue and Federal Boulevard, which is near Jefferson Park and north, northwest of Empower Field at Mile High. While following the suspect vehicle, police used a license plate reading technology and information database, Flock, to confirm the vehicle had been stolen from a nearby jurisdiction.
"Shortly after, officers moved in, taking four occupants from the SUV into custody," the agency reported on Facebook. "One made an effort to flee on foot but was quickly taken into custody."
The officers searched the stolen vehicle and found two AK-47 rifles, two handguns, an inert hand grenade and multiple bags of suspected fentanyl.

(Courtesy the Denver Police Department)The agency said the driver was a man with previous felony convictions, and said he was arrested for investigation of auto theft, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and possession of a controlled substance.
Two occupants of the vehicle were arrested on active warrants, as well as for investigation of possession of a controlled substance, and the fourth occupant was arrested for investigation of a controlled substance and trespassing.
