England keeper Jamie Smith has hailed the Indian side despite their 5-wicket loss in the IND vs ENG 1st Test at Headingley. The contest went to Day 5 with Jamie Smith hitting the winning runs in what was a record chase. And while it was a stunning victory, the young Englishman acknowledged that India were ‘fantastic’ throughout the 5 days of the India vs England 1st test.
‘They kept trying all day’ Jamie Smith hails Shubman Gill-led India
England were set a 371-run target, needing 350 on the final day to win. Ben Duckett scored scintillating century, while Joe Root and Zak Crawley chipped in with half-centuries. Jamie Smith, later finished the job, with a quick-fire 44 off 55 balls.
Speaking ahead of the IND vs ENG 2nd Test in Birmingham, Smith believed India kept trying all day despite things not going their way. Shubman Gill came in for criticism for his ‘reactive’ captaincy as India conceded a game they were on top for most of the 5 days. Smith however believed that chases of that magnitude do not happen often and hailed India for their efforts.
“When they’re trying to get 10 wickets and you’re chasing 370, it’s not everyday that gets done. There could have been some head-downs at the end but they kept trying all day. I see a lot of chat about maybe some inexperience on their part but I thought they were fantastic throughout the five days,” Jamie Smith told ESPNCricinfo.
Jasprit Bumrah took 5 in the first innings but went wicketless in the second. Despite that, Smith was aware of his skillset with the new ball against the tense. The English keeper ended the game in a canter taking the attack to Ravindra Jadeja. He hit the left-armer for a six and a four to seal the chase.
“The runs at that point were not too many, so I wasn’t expecting (Bumrah) to come on and bowl, but you’re just never quite sure, especially in cricket. You don’t know what will happen. I always back our tail but there could be a couple of decent balls and suddenly you’re eight-down and the pressure’s back on you again. It was nice to just get it done and move on,” Smith added.
