Rishabh Pant wasn’t a happy man after failing to find a place in India cricket team’s playing XI in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir had decided to leave the southpaw to warm the bench while picking KL Rahul as the keeper-batter in the line-up. Former India strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai has now opened up on how Pant dealt with the snub and the intense routine that he put himself through to deal with it.
“Intense training sessions day in and day out”
Speaking to Times of India, Desai revealed that Pant had the most intense training sessions day in and day out during his time on the bench. The recently axed support staff said that the southpaw used to drag him to the gym whenever he was free and that he did not care about fatigue or workload programmes. Desai said that it was only on the day of the Champions Trophy final when Pant had approached him with a little guilt and had asked if he could take a day off.
“He did the most intense sessions day in and day out. He dragged me into the gym whenever he was free. He didn’t care about fatigue or workload programmes. All he said was he needed to keep working on himself. On the day of the final, he came to me with some kind of guilt in his mind and asked if he could take the day off. I said it was high time that he did,” Desai said.
Pant did not have a great start to the year or in the month before that. His performances in the Test series against Australia were least impressive. That was followed by the Champions Trophy snub and a poor run in IPL 2025 despite being the most paid player. However, Pant finally stormed back to form with twin hundreds in ENG vs IND 1st Test in Leeds.
“Pant has so much reserve that he will be fine for at least a year without having to do anything extraordinary. That’s why you see him moving around so well despite scoring two hundreds and keeping wickets for so long in the Headingley Test,” Desai added.
