Jack Hermansson was slept and left out cold by Gregory ‘Robocop’ Rodrigues, and needed medical treatment for several minutes.
Hermansson was looking to restore his status in the UFC middleweight rankings as he took on Rodriguez at the T-Mobile Arena.
UFCHermansson was rendered unconscious by a brutal left hook at UFC 317[/caption]The pair met on the UFC 317 card headlined by the huge lightweight title showdown between Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira.
Proceedings started brightly for the Swedish-Norwegian, who looked to work away any rust, having not fought since beating Joe Pyfer in February last year.
But it was Rodriguez who left the MMA world reeling with one of the biggest highlight-reel KOs in the UFC so far this year.
‘Robocop’ detonated a frightening left hook which crashed into the temple of the helpless 37-year-old.
It twisted his head back on his shoulders, and sent him crashing to the canvas at a rate of knots.
Hermansson was already out cold by the time his head bounced off the deck.
But Rodriguez was stunningly allowed by referee Herb Dean to conclude the bout, with another hammer-fist blow to the head.
Of course, Hermansson didn’t feel the shot having already been laying motionless and out cold in the cage.
At which point Dean did finally wave off the contest and Rodriguez celebrated wildly.
But concern was for Hermansson who didn’t move for several minutes on the floor of the octagon.
Hermansson was down for several minutes and attracted big concernGettyMedics stormed the cage and he lay still for some time as they treated him.
Eventually he was brought back to his feet in the cage but was on seriously unsteady legs.
And he was taken backstage at which point he thankfully avoided any serious damage after the brutal shots.
The MMA world couldn’t believe what they had seen, with a fan writing: “The most brutal KO I’ve ever seen. He didn’t even move, I was seriously worried.”
Another added: “Could be no coming back from that. A wild, wild KO and thankfully he’s okay now.”
Hermansson now faces a huge climb back to the top should he want to continue his career at a high level.
Hermansson did regain consciousness after intense medical treatmentGettyHe has faced big names in his career such as Sean Strickland, Jarod Cannonier and Marvin Vettori but has fell at every hurdle.
Meanwhile for Rodriguez, it was a much-needed win as he bounced back from his own defeat to Cannonier earlier in the year in February.
