‘I take ownership’: Starmer on his horror week ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Starmer denied that he was making excuses, but said he is the one in charge of the government and therefore is the one to blame.

“My rule of leadership is, when things go well you get the plaudits; when things don’t go well you carry the can. I take responsibility for all the decisions made by this government.”

It’s Starmer’s third major climbdown within a month, following the U-turns on a national grooming inquiry, and winter fuel payments.

“I’m putting this as context rather than excuse: I was heavily focused on what was happening with Nato and the Middle East all weekend,” he told The Times.

Starmer now faces a major loss of authority, another multi-billion black hole to fill, more tax rises, calls for big changes in No 10, and a divided Labour party.

The prime minister defended the U-turn on welfare, telling the Times that it was a response to scrutiny and pushback from his party colleagues.

“Getting it right is more important than ploughing on with a package which doesn’t necessarily achieve the desired outcome.” he said.
