Man City vs Al-Hilal Stats: The Key Insights
Manchester City are huge favourites to progress from this tie, winning inside 90 minutes in 75.0% of the Opta supercomputer’s latest 10,000 simulations. Al-Hilal were one of just three teams outside of Europe and South America not to lose a game in the group stage. Manchester City scored more goals (13) than any other side in the group stage, while they also recorded the most shots (60) and the biggest expected goals tally (9.9).Despite a 2024-25 season that fell below their usual lofty standards, Manchester City are purring at the 2025 Club World Cup – and that’s a big problem for everyone else.
In the group stage, Man City scored more goals (13) than any other side, recorded the most shots (60) and posted the biggest expected goals tally (9.9).
Pep Guardiola boasts a flawless record at the Club World Cup, winning all 11 of his matches across various editions. His teams have outscored opponents 38-4 in those games, including a 13-2 tally at this year’s tournament. Remarkably, Guardiola’s sides have won 10 of those 11 matches by a margin of at least two goals.
City were the only side to win all three of their group games. Their latest win – a 5-2 commanding win over Juventus – saw them qualify for the round of 16 as the winners of Group G.
Guardiola has carefully managed the minutes of his key man, Rodri, easing him back into action after he missed most of last season with a knee injury. The Spanish midfielder played only 125 of a possible 270 minutes in the group, but City just look so much better when he is on the pitch.
Setting the tempo from the base of midfield, he’s made more line-breaking passes (25) than any other City player at the tournament, averaging 18 per 90 minutes. Only three players could better that rate in the groups (100+ mins played).
Al-Hilal arrive in the knockout stage under the guidance of new manager Simone Inzaghi, having proven difficult to beat in a tough group that included Real Madrid and Salzburg. They sealed qualification with a 2-0 win over Pachuca, thanks to goals from Salem Al Dawsari and Marcos Leonardo — two of the club’s top scorers this season. Al Dawsari has scored 27 goals in all competitions since the start of 2024-25, while Marcos Leonardo has 26.
Defensively, they have an experienced backline featuring the likes of João Cancelo, Kalidou Koulibaly and Renan Lodi. In the case of Cancelo, he will face a Man City side he left in slightly acrimonious circumstances back in January 2023. He’ll be keen to get one over his former club, but City will take a lot of stopping.
