The greatest hits album, Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of the Beach Boys, has rocketed up the Billboard 200 at No. 14 for the week of June 28, a new chart high for the set that was originally released in 2003. It includes nearly all the group’s top 40 hits except for “The Little Girl I Knew” and “It’s OK.” The album, which has been on the chart for a startling 356 weeks, was No. 52 the previous week and was awarded the “greatest gainer” award for its chart leap.
The news of the chart jump comes as Wilson’s cause of death was announced. His primary cause of death was from "respiratory arrest," according to TMZ.
Though Sounds of Summer is certainly a successful collection, it’s far from the highest-charting Beach Boys hits collection.
“We suggested Endless Summer, because that was the name of a surfing movie back in the ‘60s and it also gave the connotation of timelessness, which the Beach Boys’ certainly had,” Beach Boys vocalist Mike Love said in an interview for The Billboard Book of Number One Albums.
“Brian and I wrote that song in the early morning hours of the day President Kennedy was assassinated,” Love said. “We stayed up to 2 or 3 a.m. and we awoke the next morning to the news that Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. We had just finished writing this song about losing someone you loved. We didn’t change it, but the impact and the emotions of that event intertwined with creating that song and the actual performance in the studio.”
