‘We're 60, y'all': Michelle Obama comments on divorce rumors in new interview ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The Obama family is no stranger to public speculation on their private lives, especially when it comes to recent, recurring rumors of a possible divorce.

Michelle Obama spoke with NPR’s Rachel Martin on “Wild Card” about the spotlight on her marriage to former President Barack Obama and how living in the public eye means chatter about both what they do and say — and what they don’t do and say.

Rumors that the former first lady and Barack Obama are divorcing started spreading online after she did not attend President Donald Trump’s inauguration or former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral.

“The fact that people don’t see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage,” she said. “It’s like, ‘OK, so we don’t Instagram every minute of our lives. We are 60. We’re 60, y’all.'”

“You just are not going to know what we’re doing every minute of the day,” the former first lady added.

Her absence from the events had everything to do with the period of her life she is now in — not with the state of her marriage, Michelle Obama explained in the interview.

“Every word, every utterance, every heel on my shoe, every blink of my eye, every fist-bump was analyzed, dissected, and broadcast – celebrated in some instances and ridiculed or disparaged in others,” Michelle Obama said of her time as first lady.

Now, “the stakes are not so high,” she said, and she’s decided to not attend “all the things that [she’s] supposed to attend.”

“That was a part of me using my ambition to say, ‘Let me define what I want to do, apart from what I’m supposed to do, what the world expects of me.’ And I have to own that. Those are my choices,” she said.

The former first lady said she had to “sit in” and “own” any backlash that she received for deciding what to do with her time.

“It’s my life now, and I can say that,” she said.

Michelle Obama has addressed the rumor mill when speculations of a possible divorce surfaced in the past. On an episode of the “Work in Progress with Sophia Bush” podcast in April, the former first lady made similar statements regarding her decision to say “no” to things she does not want to do.

Michelle Obama noted in her NPR interview that at their age they “don’t take selfies” or post too much about their personal lives, despite her family being considered “famous.”

“Barack was joking, ‘You don’t even take pictures of anything we do.’ I was like, ‘I’m not thinking about a picture,'” she said, noting she’s in the present moment. “I’m here.”

The married couple of 32 years share daughters Malia, 26, and Sasha, 24.

While Michelle Obama noted the family doesn’t often share their selfies, the former first lady recently posted a rare glimpse into their family life on Instagram for Sasha’s birthday.

The former president has yet to make a comment on the divorce rumors.
