Dewald Brevis set for Test debut as WTC champions announce Playing XI for 1st Zimbabwe Test ...Middle East

T20 sensation Dewald Brevis is all set to get a taste of Test cricket. The youngster will make his Test debut for South Africa after the World Test champions named their Playing XI for the Zimbabwe Test. Keshav Maharaj will lead the Proteas in the absence of Temba Bavuma, who is nursing an injury. South Africa will be without many from the WTC Final-winning XI, including Aiden Markram and Kagiso Rabada.

The 22-year-old Dewald Brevis has played 22 First Class matches, scoring 1322 runs at an average of 41.31. He also has 10 wickets in those matches, bowling leg-spin. In the last CSA 4-Day Series Division 1, Brevis finished the season as the second top scorer with 573 runs in 12 innings at an average of 47.75, including two centuries and as many fifties. He continued to excel in T20 competitions. For Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, he came in as an injury replacement and scored 225 runs in six matches. Brevis also earned a recall for the T20 tri-series.

“Brevis is a good kid. I have always had an affiliation with him. Probably shares similar interests. Just to see his transition from two years ago to where he is now and how he has really broken down the door by putting in strong domestic performances. If I’m not mistaken, I think he was the Titans player of the year or across all various formats here, really dominated. So really excited to see some no-look sixes to win this Test match. But just seeing the character come through, play and play with the freedom that he does play in domestic format,” stand-in captain Keshav Maharaj said of Dewald Brevis.

Three debutants for South Africa

Along with Dewald Brevis, South Africa have also handed debuts to Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Codi Yusuf. 19-year-old Kwena Maphaka has already played a Test against Pakistan, bagging three wickets. All-rounder Cody Yusuf has played 33 first-class matches, bagging 105 wickets and scoring 609 runs. He also had an excellent campaign in the CSA 4-Day Series, bagging 23 wickets. Wicketkeeper-batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius has played 7 first-class matches, averaging 60.62, including three centuries and a fifty.

South Africa are playing Zimbabwe in a Test match for the first time since 2017. The Proteas have never lost a Test match to their African rivals. In 9 Tests, South Africa have won 8 with only one ending in a draw back in 2001 in Bulawayo.
