ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The search for 5-year-old Zy’Jae St. Pierre, who fell into the Genesee River nearly a month ago, continues as his family holds onto hope. Despite extensive search efforts, Zy’Jae’s body has not been found.
“I really thank the team and I thank everyone that is praying for us. But it’s hard,” said Zy’Jae’s grandmother, Latoraya Bryan.
News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin spoke with Bryan, who shared her emotional struggle.
“Usually when I come home from work, he’ll run to the door,” Bryan said. “Hey grandma, you’re home,” she added, reflecting on her grandson’s absence. “I started crying because I know I won’t hear that anymore or see him. So it’s really tearing me up inside,” said Bryan.
Authorities resumed their search efforts Thursday morning, with RG&E reducing the flow of the Genesee River at the Mt. Morris Dam to allow divers into High Falls Basin. Despite three hours of diving and drone scans, there was still no sign of Zy’Jae. Bryan expressed her gratitude for the search teams.
“The swim team is out there risking their lives for this family,” she said. “Hoping that they find him so it can bring us some closure because we need the closure. I miss little papa. He’s my papa. I miss him,” Bryan said.
Bryan also addressed negative comments circulating online about the family.
“I don’t care about none of the negative things that have been said or being said. It won’t stop me from finding him,” she said. “So I’m hoping whatever negativity that they are saying, they turn it back into a positive,” Bryan added. “Because this family really doesn’t need that right now. We need your prayers, that’s all we need,” she said.
