Denis Villeneuve, acclaimed for his direction of the "Dune" series, has been announced as the director of the next James Bond film, marking a significant milestone as the first Bond movie produced under Amazon MGM Studios' creative leadership . This transition represents a new chapter in the franchise's storied history, with Villeneuve bringing his distinctive cinematic vision to one of cinema’s most enduring spy sagas. The involvement of renowned producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman further underscores the high-profile nature of this project.
Villeneuve commented, “Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor. Villeneuve is about to start shooting a third Dune film, Dune: Messiah, which is currently scheduled for a 2026 release. He is also attached to direct a historical drama about Cleopatra, an adaptation of Arthur C Clarke’s science fiction novel Rendezvous with Rama, and an adaptation of a science fiction short story by South Korean writer Kim Bo-young.
James Bond movie to be released dates back to 2021’s No Time To Die, which also saw Daniel Craig portray the titular 007 agent for the last time. Actors rumored to take on the role next have included Idris Elba, James Norton, Theo James, Callum Turner and Harris Dickinson, with the latest name being Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Most recently, blockbusters Dune and Dune: Part Two grossed a combined total of more than $1bn (£730m) worldwide, with both films nominated for Best Picture Oscars in their respective years.
