McAfee, 38, has been absent from the WWE‘s broadcast team – where he usually provides color commentary – since the Money In The Bank premium live event on June 6.

Ahead of Monday Night Raw earlier this week, McAfee explained that he is taking a break to recharge before Night of Champions.

Speaking on the Pat McAfee Show, he said: “Monday Night Raw‘s on tonight. I will not be commentating.

“[I’m] continuing to just kind of catch up on life as a whole. Post-Money in the Bank, Pre-Night of Champions feels like a good time.

“I was getting pretty exhausted there. So shoutout to everybody at the WWE looking out for me, too. Very, very thankful.”

McAfee appeared to hint that he would be returning to wrestling fans’ screens for the Night of Champions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia this Saturday.

The event, which is still going ahead in the Middle East despite tensions between Israel and Iran in the area, will see John Cena defend his WWE Championship against CM Punk.

McAfee has thrown himself at WWE in recent months, including stepping INTO THE RING as a wrestler himself last month for a battle with Gunther at WWE Backlash.

Pat McAfee's playing days

Pat McAfee enjoyed a hugely successful stint before switching to a career in the media.

The talk show star played punter in the NFL for eight seasons from 2009 to 2016.

He was a seventh round NFL Draft pick in 2009 out of West Virginia and spent his entire career with the Indianapolis Colts.

The ex-punter was named to the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2016, and he was a first team All-Pro in 2014, as well.

McAfee owns the unique NFL record of the highest career net average punting yards with 41.4 yards while his longest ever punt was 74.

Fans online were pleased to hear McAfee was putting himself first to rest up, but were eager to see him back on their screens soon.

One wrote: “Rest up and come back ASAP. WE NEED YOU!”

While another added: “We miss you! Hope you rest well, please come back”.

A third posted: “Good for him! Rest up, Pat!”

And a fourth commented: “Take all the time you need, Pat. Hope you come back soon”.
