Fifty years after she was found fatally shot on a gravel road with her 18-month-old son clutching her hand, the death of a Greeley woman remains a mystery.
Marjorie Sue Fithian and her 18-month-old son, Dylan, who were set to return to Greeley from a family visit in Denver on June 24, 1975, never boarded their bus, according to a Weld County Sheriff’s Office post on X.
Later that morning, Fithian was found dead with a gunshot wound to her head on a gravel road about 50 miles from Denver. Dylan was clutching her hand, surrounded by broken glass but uninjured when a ranch hand found the two and called for help, according to the post.
In the 50 years since, the sheriff’s office has pursued many leads, but none of them have led to the person who killed Fithian.
At one point, a local drug dealer claimed to be involved, only to retract his statement later, the post states. Investigators also looked into the possibility of her hitchhiking or an unknown attacker targeting her, but have not found anything concrete.
Her son has no memory of the incident, only learning about his mother through family stories.
Anyone with information on Fithian’s death can call the Weld County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 960-304-6464 or email CrimeTips@Weld.Gov.
