Teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout has broken his own national record in the 200m in his first senior race outside of Australia.

The 17-year-old clocked a rapid 20.02 seconds at the Ostrava Golden Spike event in the Czech Republic.

Competing in his highly-anticipated first race in Europe, Gout breezed past favourite Cuban Reynier Mena at the at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event.

Gout had already broken Australia’s 56-year record in the 200m in December, but has now beaten his personal best time by two hundredths of a second.

Widely tipped to be the man to finally break Usain Bolt‘s world record in the 100m and 200m, Gout has beaten the Jamaican’s time he set on his first Golden Spike meet 19 years ago.

Bolt could only manage 20.28 seconds, with Gout stating before his race that he thrives off being known as the ‘next Usain Bolt’.

He said: “It definitely feels great, I’ve heard that a lot of sprinters run here really good. I know Usain Bolt ran here nine times, so the event clearly has a great tradition.

“Who doesn’t want to be Usain Bolt? Being compared to Usain Bolt feels great but I would like to put my personality in the upcoming story.”

And speaking after sealing his place in national history, the Queensland native remarked: “I feel good.

“New personal best, new national record in my first European race.

“I don’t feel any pressure. Because as soon as I step out on that track, it’s just me by myself and what I’ve got to do – my favourite thing, and that’s to run.

“I just go out there and run and nothing stops me from doing that.

Gout finished 0.17 seconds ahead of favourite Mena, who had won the previous two Diamond League 200m racesAFP

“(I need to) Get some more races in me and (the 20-second barrier) will drop for sure.”

Gout is yet to post a legal time under 20 seconds, having run a wind-assisted 19.84 seconds at the Australian national championships in Perth in April.

Bolt only managed to break the 20-second barrier four months before his 18th birthday, with Gout having two months left to break his record.

The 200m Australia record is just one of a number that Gout has already smashed from his fledgling career so far.

He ran a blistering 200m time of 20.60 at the Under-20 World Championships in August, which beat Bolt’s record that had stood for 22 years.

And he also holds the under-18 and under-20 records for Australia and Oceania in the 100m and 200m.

Gout has taken the athletics world by storm since bursting on the sceneAFP

Gout’s stunning sprints has seen him invited to train with Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles.

And his dazzling displays have also caught the eye of Bolt, who hailed the youngster in December.

Taking to social media, he simply stated: “He looks like young me.”

His words came after he previously passed on some advice for Gout whilst reflecting on his own early days in the sport.
