HENRIETTA, N.Y. – First responders in Henrietta teamed up with UR Medicine to demonstrate how to handle heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Local EMS providers have been busy responding to heat emergencies in recent days. Doctors in local emergency rooms have also been dealing with similar cases.
On Tuesday, UR Medicine and EMS teams from the Monroe-Livingston Regional EMS Council simulated responses to a heat stroke emergency call. Volunteer “victims” mimicked heat stroke symptoms while EMS personnel provided emergency care.
“You don’t have sports doctors, athletic trainers, other certified trained medical professional like paramedics at all of these sites where people are working or recreating or playing sports,” said Dr. Ari Epstein, a sports medicine fellow at UR Medicine. “So the best ears and eyes to watch for these kinds of changes are with coaches, teammates, co-workers, parents. Those are folks who can understand where someone might be showing signs of distress, why it’s so important to remove them from the source of heat.”
Officials said this week’s heat wave is not expected to be the last this summer, with unusually high temperatures predicted for July and August. They emphasized the importance of being trained to the highest standards and ensuring everyone knows the risks of heat stroke and how to respond.
