A hefty portion of its content last week focused on migrants arriving from France in small boats. “They’re criminals – they should be deported, full stop,” demanded studio guest Tom Hunt, a Tory MP.
The rolling news channel last week highlighted an Afghan rapist in Scotland, a Chinese rapist in London and, above all, the grooming gangs and the need to reset the UK’s relations with Pakistan and deport convicted sex offenders holding dual nationality.
The formula is working. GB News has found a “distinct niche” in the market and “taps into a segment of viewers seeking alternative narratives”, says John Ryley, former head of Sky News. “Its opinion-led content appeals to audiences who feel underserved by mainstream news organisations.”
In the report’s online news rankings, GB News was joint sixth with the Telegraph and ahead of the Sun, Mirror and ITV News. The rankings are based on the weekly news usage of 2,000 people, surveyed by YouGov.

GB News Radio, a simulcast service, has recorded a 22.9 per cent annual increase in listeners, out-stripping Rupert Murdoch’s Talk network, according to Rajar data last month.

But the charter is full of contradictions. GB News stands for “celebrating the United Kingdom”, yet one presenter derided it as a “pathetic country”. It believes in “communities that support one another”, while presenter Martin Daubney calls for the multicultural Notting Hill carnival to be “canned”. It will “refuse to be swayed by partisan agendas”, but presenters refer to their colleague Farage simply as “Nigel”.
In the Reuters Institute report, GB News emerged as the least trusted of broadcast news brands, polling only marginally better than the tabloid press. Respondents said they wanted news that was accurate, transparent and free of bias. Yet GB News argues that is just what it provides, and a growing niche appears to believe it.
