“We were a small startup and had our share of skeptics," Smith revealed in a 2022 memo to employees announcing his retirement. "But that first night of operations set into motion what would become a global connector of people and possibilities that would change our world for the better."
Prior to his development of FedEx, Smith—who was born in 1944 in Marks, Mississippi—served four years in the U.S. Marines in which he completed two tours of duty in Vietnam. With all that Smith achieved, he gained a fan in former President George W. Bush, who referred to Smith as "one of the finest Americans of our generations" in a statement released in response to the news of Smith's death.
Smith is survived by his second wife—Dianne Avis—and his 10 children, which include film producer Molly Smith, and former Atlanta Falcons head coach and current Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
