The Waterfront wrapped up season 1 with several deaths and a surprising cliffhanger — but where does the story go from here?
Kevin Williamson‘s new Netflix show, which premiered on Thursday, June 19, introduced the Buckley family who have ruled the North Carolina town of Havenport for decades. Their attempt to retain control of their fishing empire ultimately led them to more dangerous activities — such as drug smuggling.
By the time the finale rolled around, patriarch Harlan (Holt McCallany) rekindled his connection with wife Belle (Maria Bello). The couple went through a role reversal as Belle took over leading the family business.
Their son Cane (Jake Weary), meanwhile, was finally able to step up — and even shot a gun — to take down Grady (Topher Grace). Then there was Bree (Melissa Benoist), who saved herself from near-death while out at sea and subsequently got to a better place with her teenage son. Even newcomer Shawn (Rafael L. Silva) found his place in the family after revealing he was Harlan’s secret son.
What Parts of Kevin Williamson's Drug Trade Show 'The Waterfront' Are Real?
In addition to the cliffhanger with Belle, The Waterfront ended with Jenna (Humberly González) not wanting to pursue a future with Cane. He then attempted to mend his marriage to Peyton (Danielle Campbell), who took him back but only on her terms.
Weary, 35, Campbell, 30, and González, 33, answered Us‘ burning questions about where their love triangle — and the show — goes next. Keep scrolling for answers to some season 2 questions:
Who Did Cane Want to End Up With?
Dana Hawley/Netflix © 2025“It was important to really establish a connection between Peyton and Cane because we see it tried and tested throughout the season. So we really wanted to establish that there’s love there and that they have so much history,” Weary told Us about balancing both fictional relationships. “So when Jenna comes into the picture, it’s really important for Cane to be pulled in two different directions and you really see the audience.”
He continued: “You really see Cane lead with his heart a lot of the time. It might not be the direction you’d like him to head to but I think that’s what makes him compelling. He has an opportunity to change the course of the current path where his life has led him to this point. So it’s interesting to see what he does with this kind of new opportunity.”
Weary wouldn’t give away whether he thought Peyton or Jenna was the better fit for Cane.
“It’ll be great for the audience to see they both bring something that is unique and kind of different,” he noted. “It’ll be tough to watch Cane do the balancing act between the two.”
What Led to Cane and Peyton’s Initial Split?
Dana Hawley/NetflixWeary called Cane and Peyton’s onscreen breakup a “culmination of the miscommunication” between them.
“In any relationship, communication is paramount and when you see the cracks form and the relationship throughout the course of the season, you’re seeing it as a result of Cane’s behavior,” he told Us. “And it is this new life that he’s taken on and the insecurity in his place in the family and his duties as a husband and a father. It’s complicated.”
Where Is Peyton Headed in Season 2?
Netflix / Courtesy Everett CollectionAfter the first season ended with Peyton taking charge in her marriage, Campbell weighed in on what could come next.
“She sets herself up as being aware of the family business and all of its flaws. I would like to see her be a powerhouse and take on a role inside of it where she would be very well-utilized as somebody who no one would initially perceive as being someone who’s taking part in it,” the actress teased to Us. “Just like you really wouldn’t initially see Belle being involved. Women are so powerful and they have a completely different way of going about working than men. I think there’s something really exciting about watching that on screen.”
Could Peyton and Jenna Actually Be Friends?
Netflix / Courtesy Everett CollectionDespite Peyton supporting Jenna when her dad died, Campbell isn’t sure how long that will last, telling Us, “I had put myself in a personal mindset of how that would feel. It is so conflicting because on the one hand, you’re furious and heartbroken. The betrayal is so real. But then on the other side, death in a way can surpass all of those feelings. It was a moment where you watch Peyton be this powerhouse of a woman putting herself aside to recognize that somebody is literally gone from Jenna’s life.”
Campbell clarified that it doesn’t mean “in any way, shape or form” that Jenna is forgiven for sleeping with Cane.
“Peyton is just saying this is not the time and place for us to have this conversation. Peyton is a really strong woman who knows how to take care of things, especially in a crisis,” Campbell continued. “It’s such an imperative part of her character and one of the things that Cane was attracted to initially and it’s something that made Jenna fall in love with her immediately.”
She added: “It was a really selfless side of Peyton. That being said, there also could be other reasons she does what she does. I think that’s so cool about her. You don’t know what’s happening behind her motives or her reasoning behind it.”
Which TV Shows Are Renewed in 2025-2026?
Where Does Jenna Stand With Cane?
Netflix / Courtesy Everett CollectionWhile reflecting on season 1, González broke down the dynamic between Cane and Jenna.
“It’s the one who got away. It’s all about circumstance and timing. Her making that decision [to end things] is doing what’s best for her right in that time because she can’t fall in love and grieve her father. At the same time, she also feels like a bad person for doing this horrible thing to his wife and him,” she explained to Us. “If it was different circumstances, they would be endgame. There might still be a possibility for that.”
She continued: “They would have to get over a lot of that. But that last episode was so emotional. I remember being on set and I spent 15 hours just crying the entire time.”
What Role Should Jenna Have in Season 2?
Dana Hawley/Netflix“She’s a journalist. She’s used to uncovering stories and figuring what’s up. She has been so focused on her dad dying that she’s not even looking at what’s happening in the city and what’s happening with Cane and noticing what’s going on,” González noted. “She might notice that he’s been beaten up a few times but it doesn’t even affect her because she’s so focused on this other thing now that her dad is not in the picture. If she stays in the town because she doesn’t like her job, the skills as a journalist might play into what’s really going on here? Is she going to be a whistleblower? Is she going to be involved in some way?”
González expressed interest in building on Jenna’s story outside of her love life.
“Maybe she could be put in a position to lie for him because she loves him and she becomes part of the darkness. I have no idea. But right now, obviously the women are in the dark about it. Peyton and Jenna, what if they band together?” She added. “There’s so many ways here that we could get in the action. Maybe there is room for them to come together. What if it does become a real love triangle? I have no idea. It’s kind of exciting when there’s so many ways that this could go.”
Which Cameos Are the Cast Members Rooting for?
Dana Hawley/Netflix © 2025During an exclusive interview with Us, Campbell teased who she would personally love to see on season 2, saying, “If Katie Holmes could come onto the show, I would probably just smile and never stop.”
