Dana White issues Ben Askren plea as ex-UFC fighter faces life-saving transplant ...Middle East

Dana White has made a public appeal to support his former fighter Ben Askren.

Askren was rushed to hospital with severe pneumonia at the start of June, and he now needs a life-saving lung transplant.

UFC commentator and former two-division champion Daniel Cormier confirmed last week that Askren has been transferred to his home town of Wisconsin to be treated there.

This came after Askren’s wife, Amy Askren, provided an update on the ex-UFC star’s condition, saying he was bed-bound in care but unresponsive.

In a follow-up statement, Amy revealed earlier this week that her husband remained in hospital on a ventilator as his battle with the illness heightened.

“His body can’t handle coming off sedation too much yet,” she wrote on Facebook.

“I’m still praying for a miracle with his current lungs, but they are currently starting the evaluation process for a lung transplant.”

The MMA fraternity has pulled together in support of Askren and his family since the update.

And UFC President and CEO Dana White is hoping fans can do the same to provide Askren with a much-needed lung transplant.

He took to Instagram on Saturday morning to share a link so that his 10.5million followers could donate to Askren.

“Click the link to help Ben Askren,” the 55-year-old said.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the cost of lung transplantation in the United States ranges from $300,000 to $400,000.

This will come as a heavy financial burden for Askren, who retired from MMA in 2019 after a three-fight stint with the UFC.

Askren entered MMA’s premier promotion as one of the hottest commodities in the sport.

The American boasted an undefeated 19-0 record following dominant welterweight championship reigns in Bellator and ONE FC.

However, it didn’t quite go to plan in the UFC.

Askren won his promotional debut against Robbie Lawler in March 2019 under controversial circumstances when referee Herb Dean prematurely stopped their fight.

Four months later, Askren fell victim to the fastest knockout defeat in the company’s history when he was flattened by a flying knee from Jorge Masvidal in just five seconds.

Damian Maia then placed the final nail in Askren’s UFC career by submitting him in October 2019.

‘Funky’ hung up his gloves thereafter, but did return to action two years later to get knocked out by Jake Paul in boxing.
