What is not clear – and what Trump cannot know – is if the actions will be remembered positively, or as the moment that triggered a wider regional conflict and ensnare the country in the kind of foreign war he vowed to avoid.
On Saturday morning, after it was reported several B-2 bombers – the only planes capable of carrying the so-called “bunker buster bombs” – had left their base at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, it seemed only a matter of time before a strike would happen.
Trump said US forces had hit Iran’s three main nuclear sites: Natanz, Esfahan and Fordow.
“The strikes were a spectacular military success,” Trump said in televised speech from the Oval Office on Saturday evening.

It was reported the US had contacted Iran to inform it that the strikes was its only planned operation and that it was not seeking regime change.
He added: “If peace does not come quickly, we will go after those other targets with precision, speed and skill. Iran, the bully of the Mideast, must now make peace.”
The US cannot be certain what repercussions the strike at Fordow might trigger.
But there are fears that strikes on nuclear sites risk radioactive contamination across the Middle East, potentially hurting the Iranian people Trump claims he wants to help.
There is part of him, and part of his supporters, who will love what he has done, taking decisive action and forgetting his decision not to strike in 2019.
Trump will be hoping that the fall out is literally contained at the three bases it has struck.
There are other reasons the US should be anxious.
Trump’s actions represent a huge gamble. The world is watching and praying that the gamble pays off.
