Ilana Dashe, a San Diego mother, will be among the 150 artists to display her work at the 27th annual Carlsbad Village Association’s Art in the Village this Sunday.
The event, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., is an open-air art show that brings together art of all kinds,including oil, watercolor, mixed media, digital, glasswork, photography, woodworking, jewelry, pottery, sculpture, and more. Patrons can interact with the artists in their booths, and all artwork on display is for purchase.
We spoke to Dashe about her career and what it means for her to be a working artist, showing her work at this
How did you get into the art industry? How long have you been doing it?
My connection to art is deep-rooted. My mother owned an art gallery in Bogota, Colombia before we immigrated to the US. – she remains my inspiration and connection to art. My BFA in Visual Communications supports a successful career in design and advertising for over two decades. However, having the chance to live abroad in Tokyo (2016-2021), shifted my primary focus from design and advertising to fine art. During my six years in Japan I discovered a passion for printmaking. What began as a hesitant step into a local studio quickly grew into a deep love for the medium. I immersed myself in the techniques of monoprinting, lithography, and screen printing, learning alongside Japanese artists and teachers.
Since my return to the U.S., I have made it my primary purpose to express myself and my visions through printmaking and my work as a professional artist. I am so thrilled to be showing in galleries locally and downtown San Diego in the Spanish Village Arts Center in Studio 33.
Tell me about your most meaningful work.
My Ginkgo Biloba themed works are most meaningful to me. I fell in love with the shape and symbolic meaning behind the tree in Tokyo where in the fall I’d see seas of the green turned yellow leaves on the ground at the turn of the season. The ginkgo represents longevity, and has become the symbol of my brand and my favorite works.
What do you hope Art in the Village attendees get out of seeing your work? Is this your first time participating in Art in the Village?
My work is airy, minimal, abstract and fresh. I want people to appreciate and stop in their tracks to view a new perspective and a look that doesn’t match the typical landscape or floral representations. I’m very excited to participate in Art in the Village for the first time this year!
Tell me about what it’s like being a mother and an artist.
As a single mother of three, including twin daughters, I’m committed to showing them what is possible for a woman with passion, priorities, and drive—specifically through my art. While I support my family through my design work, I recognize my success since exhibiting my fine art locally over the past four years and can’t ignore the overwhelming response from collectors and the general public. I know I have just scratched the surface in my artmaking process and visual exploration. I am moved deeply in this phase of my life to create, and continue creating. My favorite thing is sharing all that is running a business with my kids. My 14 year old son is my IT for my website. My daughters both serve as art critics and all three are my cheerleaders. I wouldn’t be quite as motivated if not to succeed – for them!
Who inspires you?
My mother, artist and biggest role model since birth. My favorite artist from an early age is Joan Miro. I love abstract and contemporary art, and I am blown away by the sculptors and masters of the Renaissance, and the crafters of the Mid-century modern furniture design movement.
