Ugh. But why? What is the reason?!

In an interview with Yahoo! Life, Dr. Donald Grant, a senior clinical advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, explained why caffeine is not the healthiest choice during heatwaves.

"The caffeine content can trigger a diuretic effect, increasing urination and reducing vital body fluids. If they’re not then replaced with sufficient rehydration, people may become ill or more at-risk of developing a heat-related illness," Dr. Grant told Yahoo! Life.

In addition to caffeine, experts also recommend avoiding a number of other foods and drinks including spicy foods, fried and oily foods, meals high in protein, sugary foods and alcohol. All can raise your risk of developing a heat related illness or general discomfort in hot weather.

Dr. Grant recommends aiming aim for 2.5-3 liters of fluids each day during hot weather. As well, eating hydrating foods such as watermelon, tomatoes, cucumber, strawberries, bell peppers, celery and lettuce can be beneficial for staying healthy and comfortable during sweltering summer days.
