Jon Jones told he can restore UFC legacy after title decision on one condition: ‘Game of chicken’ ...Middle East

UFC analyst Chael Sonnen believes Jon Jones’ legacy will be restored if Tom Aspinall fails to score a quick KO of Cyril Gane.

Jones currently holds the UFC heavyweight title, but hasn’t defended his belt since his victory over Stipe Miocic last year.

‘Bones’ has then been locked in negotiations with Tom Aspinall over arguably the UFC‘s biggest showdown, but made outrageous financial demands.

But Aspinall confirmed he intended to move on with Jones toying with the idea of retiring from the octagon entirely.

Calls for UFC president Dana White to strip Jones of his title are growing, with Aspinall potentially being lined up to face Cyril Gane for the vacant belt.

Jones has already beaten Gane to secure the belt in 2023, submitting the Frenchman in just three minutes.

And Sonnen believes if it takes Aspinall longer to end the contest, it will prove his own theory that he is the superior fighter.

He explained: “If this little game of chicken plays out and he doesn’t compete with Aspinall, this little thing called legacy is not going to go go in his direction unless Tom and Ciryl Gane see Round two.

“Jon only needed a couple of minutes and never even got punched in the face.

“Tom Aspinall is going to have to beat four minutes and 31 seconds.

“And if he doesn’t, Jon Jones without lifting a finger, he’s going to get that legacy and get that reputation back.”

Jones would likely need to take on Aspinall himself to cement his credentials as the top dog right now.

The wider MMA fraternity are less convinced and have even launched an appeal to see him forced to vacate his crown.

For now the entire future of the division is up in the air, with Jones refusing to budge and accept the offer.

Aspinall is awaiting his for his next move to become official, but has been left in limbo with the interim title.

Jones has hinted at retirement from the UFC entirely, but White plans to give the event a few more weeks to materialise before moving on entirely.

But he has also suggested he would open to a showdown with Francis Ngannou should he return to the roster.

Although former UFC champion Alexander Volkanovski believes he should simply retire if he is not interested in facing Aspinall.

Jones has been urged to vacate his belt if he doesn’t fight AspinallGetty

“I’ve always been: if you’re the champ, you defend your belt. It’s a responsibility,” Volkanovski explained.

“You can’t just sit out. You need to be reasonably active. You need to fight whoever’s there.

“Don’t hold up the division. I know your resume is incredible. You’re considered the greatest of all time, we get that.

“So, if you don’t want to fight, just retire, you’re done. Or if you want big fights, you’re going to have to vacate the title.

“It’s a responsibility. That’s how I’ve always looked at being the champ.”
