Jake Brown drew plenty of chuckles on Friday, including some from LSU head coach Jay Johnson, but Brown is since ready to set the record straight.
During a press conference ahead of Game 1 of the College World Series Finals, Brown and pitcher Anthony Eyanson were asked about the analytical and intense preparation Johnson adds for the Tigers. Brown went on to say each player receives a clear set of instructions for every game, something that is important because the Tigers are “not really scholars” after coming to school for baseball.
“In our meetings before the games, there’s a very clear set of instructions on what every guy needs to do to be able to be his best to help the team win at any given moment,” said Brown. “Everything is very straightforward for us.
“We came here to play baseball. We’re not really scholars. So he does a great job of laying it out for us and making us go out there executing as simple as it can be. So super thankful for that.”
It was immediately clear Brown was just having fun with the moment, as evidenced by Eyanson and Johnson immediately bursting into laughter. But Brown is since trying to set the record straight.

“Our academic advisor texted me and said, ‘Hey, ya’ll are better than that.’ I said, ‘You know what, you’re right.’ We are actually a lot smarter of a team than you would think if you were just hanging out with the guys. We’re actually really good in school,” said Brown in an interview with WAFB-TV’s Jacques Doucet.
Asked for his current GPA, Brown admitted it has “slipped a little bit” from a 4.0 he had last year. He predicted it would be a 3.6 or 3.7 at this juncture.
