To the Editor:
I attended the No King Day protest in front of the Mendocino County Courthouse. I was overcome with pride to witness the local response. As I read the various signs among the protesters, I recalled many life events, what happened on Okinawa and Saipan, relatives and friends who did not come home from WWII, Korea or Vietnam. I served during the Vietnam era in the South Pacific aboard a carrier. I witnessed the bodies of my comrades being carried across the flight deck in stretchers while a stretcher behind them carried their legs. In my mind I heard again the cries and screams, and I could not help but feel filled with hatred when I heard also in my mind the words of our President calling these men losers. Without the service and sacrifice of these men and women, he would not likely be in a land where he could be President.
I remember being in the Ukiah J. C. Penny’s store when the D Day announcement was launched over the radio. Customers in the store were screaming and shouting, including my mother. Being six years old, I had no understanding of what was happening.
Dad didn’t come home for two more years – from Okinawa. He wouldn’t talk about his experiences except to say he didn’t want any Spam in the house, and he liked San Miguel Beer. My uncle was stationed on Saipan. He would not talk much about his experiences either. I was an adult before I realized the truth of these two circumstances.
The President’s resource misappropriation and ongoing falsehoods are evident to anyone who pays attention. Once again, I am proud of the people of my hometown who recognize and realize the truth.
