Fast bowler Mark Wood is targeting a return to Test cricket during the India vs England series with an eye later on the Ashes in Australia. Wood suffered a knee injury and underwent surgery for the same in March. The 35-year-old was initially ruled out for the entirety of the IND vs EG series, but could make a late return to the squad.
‘I might play a part’ Mark Wood eyes return during IND vs ENG Tests
England missed Mark Wood’s raw pace on the first morning of the 1st Test at Headingley on Friday. However, Wood could soon make a return to the set up having resumed bowling in the nets. He was at Leeds, working as a pundit for BBC Test match special when he issued an update on his recovery.
“Rehab is going well. I have just started bowling, very lightly, but I am on the comeback trail now officially. I am hoping still to play a part in this series. I am still targeting maybe the last Test. Anything before that is probably a bit too soon. The last Test I might not get there, but at the minute that is still my focus, that I might play a part,” Wood said on the sidelines of the IND vs ENG 1st Test.
Wood’s absence has compounded matters for England, who have already lost Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson to injuries. The news of 35-year-old’s return, however late, would be a huge plus for Ben Stokes and Co. Archer and Atkinson are also in line to be return after the 2nd Test. In their absence, Brydon Carse, Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue made up the England pace attack.
Wood’s ability to crank up speeds around 95 mph make him an invaluable asset. With Stuart Broad and James Anderson both retired, Ben Stokes is in search for strike bowlers and Wood is one of England’s main options. He has 119 wickets in 37 Tests, averaging 30.42.
