Just under 3 years ago, Florida attempted what has to be among the dumbest and, to some, most important field goals in Gators history. It holds a special place in my heart, and I hope there’s a spot for it in yours as well.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane.
As Pat McAfee so enthusiastically explained after it went through the uprights, that kick extended Florida football’s scoring record to 436 games. Florida had scored at least one point in every game they played, dating back to a 1988 shutout loss to Auburn. And thanks to Adam Mihalek and the Gators’ 30-3 loss to Oregon State, that record is still alive today.
The Gators continued the streak into 2023 and 2024, scoring 10 points in every game across that timespan. The current number – an active and all-time FBS record – sits at 461 games.
As entirely useless as the above play is, it had me thinking when I stumbled back across it a few days ago: Which streak would each SEC team like to see extended or ended in 2025? These are the types of questions we have to ask ourselves in June, after all.
Below you can find a relevant, hopefully interesting streak that each team (apart from Florida) will attend to in 2025.
Alabama
Extend streak of at least 1 Alabama player being selected in the first round of the NFL DraftI’m starting this with a bit of a cheater pick. I wanted to go with Alabama’s home opener streak, but seeing as the Crimson Tide play UL Monroe for their home opener and knowing the Warhawks are set to be one of the worst teams in FBS this year, I’d say that one is probably safe. Do me a favor and make sure not to pull up Alabama’s 2007 schedule – no particular reason.
Alabama owns the longest streak for first-round draft picks selected at 17 straight years. The 2026 NFL Draft isn’t until April of next year, but Kadyn Proctor and other Alabama hopefuls will still have to prove it on the gridiron in 2025.
Arkansas
End 9-year streak of finishing at or below .500 in conference playOnly Mississippi State and Vanderbilt have been worse in this category than Arkansas, which has finished at or under .500 in 9 consecutive seasons. It’s especially important for Sam Pittman as he enters his sixth season in Fayetteville.
Auburn
End the longest active streak among SEC teams without being ranked in the AP PollThis one is almost hard to believe. Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Florida have all been ranked more recently than Auburn, which has not seen itself in the AP Top 25 since Nov. 14, 2021.
It feels like it has to happen this year, right? Hugh Freeze and the Tigers are much improved on paper, adding former 5-star QB Jackson Arnold (who can hopefully benefit from a change in scenery) and Georgia Tech receiver Eric Singleton Jr. while retaining standout receiver Cam Coleman. That, mixed with what should be an improved defensive unit, theoretically gives Freeze his best roster since arriving on The Plains. If the Tigers can beat Baylor, Ball State, and South Alabama, I bet they’re ranked ahead of their first SEC matchup of the season vs. Arnold’s old school, Oklahoma.
Or… just do all the above and beat Oklahoma to leave no doubt.
Georgia
Extend 32-game win streak at Sanford StadiumGeorgia has not lost a football game at Sanford Stadium since Oct. 12, 2019, when the Bulldogs fell to unranked South Carolina, 20-17. They’ve won 32 in a row in Athens, which leads college football by a wide margin. Washington sits in second place with 20 wins.
You don’t need me to tell you how impressive that is. But can Georgia keep it going? It’s certainly going to be tough.
The Bulldogs face Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas at home this season – 3 teams all expected to be fighting for a spot in the College Football Playoff. Two of those teams – Alabama and Ole Miss – beat the Bulldogs last season, and the Longhorns advanced to the national semifinal before losing to eventual national champion Ohio State.
Kentucky
End 4-game losing streak against TennesseeIt’s a year to beat a rival for Mark Stoops and Kentucky.
As in, Stoops is probably going to be fired if the Wildcats don’t beat Tennessee and Louisville, or win at least 6 games. He’d probably prefer to do both and remove all doubt, but for obvious reasons, that will be a tough ask.
Vince Marrow leaving for an executive role with Louisville was a telling development. Marrow had been in Lexington forever, and if he’s jumping ship, it’s hard to believe there was much confidence the squad was going to win this year internally. And we know what everyone thinks of the Wildcats’ chances from an outside point of view.
Kentucky hasn’t beaten Tennessee in 4 consecutive attempts. With the state of the program, that’s a goal the Wildcats can strive to achieve this season.
LSU
Extend winning streak over South Carolina to 9There are a few interesting streaks for LSU heading into next season. For one, the Tigers have put a player in the last 24 Super Bowls – but that’s not really something the current LSU program can control.
Instead, I went with LSU’s impressive winning streak over South Carolina, which the Tigers are looking to push to 9 this season. The Gamecocks last beat LSU in 1994, and their only other win against the Tigers came all the way back in 1933. LSU holds a simply insane 20-2-1 record in all-time matchups against South Carolina.
Ole Miss
Extend 10-win season streak to 3Ole Miss has never won 10 games or more in 3 consecutive seasons. Not once in their 119-year history. They came close in the 1960s, winning 10 games in 3 of 4 seasons, but they haven’t been able to string 3 consecutive 10-win seasons together.
Until this year?
The Rebels’ schedule will certainly give them a realistic shot. Ole Miss doesn’t have a tough opponent in the non-con (unless you count Tulane) and draws just one team from last season’s CFP (Georgia). And as we mentioned earlier, Ole Miss beat that Georgia team in 2024.
The Rebels can only afford 3 losses between Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Florida, and their SEC Championship/bowl appearance(s) – assuming they take care of business against the teams they’re expected to beat.
Mississippi State
End 12-game conference losing streakMississippi State just needs to win an SEC matchup this season. Any of them will do.
The Bulldogs haven’t scored a conference win since 2023, and even that one was hard to come by. They had to work for a 7-3 win over Arkansas, what has to be one of the saddest final scores of any SEC game in the 2020s. It was their only SEC victory of the season. Last season, of course, the Bulldogs finished 0-8 in conference play.
And let me tell you, I don’t love the Bulldogs’ chances this year, either. Let’s take a look at their SEC slate, shall we?
vs. Tennessee at Texas A&M at Florida vs. Texas at Arkansas (!) vs. Georgia at Mizzou vs. Ole MissGood grief.
Mizzou
End 6-game losing streak against AlabamaWe’re closer to a Ronald Reagan presidency than we are to the last time Mizzou beat Alabama in football.
The Tigers have never beaten Alabama as a member of the SEC. In fact, the Tigers haven’t been within 2 touchdowns of beating Alabama as a member of the SEC. If the Tigers want to make it to the College Football Playoff, they’ll probably need to end that streak this season.
Mizzou is not a name you think of when trying to guess this season’s College Football Playoff field, but the Tigers have an excellent shot in 2025 thanks to a laughably easy schedule. Alabama is the toughest team the Tigers play, and Mizzou avoids the likes of Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Florida. Their toughest non-conference opponent? Kansas.
Now’s the year to get it done, Mizzou.
Oklahoma
Extend bowl streak to 27 straight yearsDon’t laugh. I’m serious.
While Mizzou plays among the easiest SEC schedules, Oklahoma absolutely plays the hardest. The Sooners will face off against Alabama, Texas, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Missouri while also playing Michigan in the nonconference. A game at South Carolina is no gimme, either. There’s a reason why Oklahoma’s over/under win total sits at 6.5 on DraftKings.
I’d take the under on that, but I still think the Sooners will crack a bowl game and continue the streak with exactly 6 wins. The Sooners haven’t missed a bowl game since 1998, when John Blake’s final team (before Bob Stoops arrived) finished 5-6.
South Carolina
Extend winning streak over Vanderbilt to 17South Carolina has beaten Vanderbilt in 16 straight games dating back to 2009, and they have a chance to extend that streak this season. Usually, this wouldn’t be in question, but the Commodores have a new look in 2025.
Diego Pavia has declared war on just about every team in the SEC at this point. He’s told Alabama the Commodores plan to run it back. He’s proclaimed the state of Tennessee as the property of Vanderbilt, not the school over in the Tennessee Valley. And while Pavia hasn’t publicly targeted South Carolina, the Gamecocks face Vanderbilt in both schools’ first SEC matchup of the season.
Mark your calendars for Sept. 13.
Tennessee
End 10-game losing streak in GainesvilleTennessee vs. Florida has been more competitive across the past few seasons, but the Gators still own Tennessee in Gainesville. The Vols haven’t beaten Florida in The Swamp in 10 straight tries, dating back to 2003. This time around, the Vols may have the advantage.
Why? Not necessarily because of the rosters on the field, but instead the date this game will be played. The Vols and Gators almost always face off early in the season, but this year the pair will face off in late November, meaning it won’t be 95 degrees in Gainesville.
Texas
Extend the nation’s longest active road win streakThe nation’s longest active true road winning streak resides in the SEC with the Texas Longhorns.
Texas has won 11 true road games in a row, dating back to Oct. 22, 2022, against Oklahoma State. And right off the bat, this win streak will be tested in 2025.
The Longhorns travel to Columbus to take on Ohio State to kick off the 2025 season, a game that could very well be a preview of the national championship matchup. For those curious, SMU currently sits in second place with 10 straight road wins.
Texas A&M
End 12-year streak of failing to reach 10 winsIn other words, break through. It’s about time, Aggies.
Texas A&M just refuses to get itself over the hump. They last won 10 or more games in a single season in 2012, when Johnny Football led the Aggies to a Cotton Bowl win over Oklahoma.
This season’s schedule will certainly give the Aggies a chance. They avoid Alabama and Georgia, but do have to face Notre Dame and Texas as well as LSU, Florida, and Mizzou. The first 2 will be tough, but the Aggies are going to have to beat the likes of LSU and Florida to consider themselves serious contenders for the College Football Playoff.
Vanderbilt
End 6-game losing streak to TennesseeAs we mentioned earlier, Diego Pavia and the Commodores are out for blood. And perhaps no date will be circled more furiously than Nov. 29 on Vanderbilt’s calendar.
The Vols have won 6 straight games against Vanderbilt, but they’re definitely vulnerable this season. Tennessee is without Nico Iamaleava after the former 5-star quarterback bolted for UCLA, and the Vols’ offense is a bit of a question mark as a result. We have to assume Josh Heupel and Co. will have figured out the offense by the last week of the season, but what if there’s a world where the Commodores hold the advantage there? I’d pick Tennessee to win straight up as of mid-June, but a lot can change between now and then.
Let’s see what you’ve got, Commodores.
