Feelin’ a little fancy? Like swishing-and-sipping-wine, listening-to-Mozart fancy? This San Diego weekend, head to a wine fest, party for a good cause and grab what might be the last chance to see a legendary hiphop act live.
The two-day California Wine Festival begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort Golf Club & Spa in Carlsbad. It’s not just about the champagne welcome and wine tastings. Try gourmet appetizers like artisan breads, cheeses and olive oils while listening to live music. Admission starts at $78 with full two-day passes available.
Up for a day trip? The Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival starts Friday, featuring barbecues, bands and balloon rides overlooking Wine Country. The event, a tradition going back to 1983, opens at noon Friday and continues until Sunday within the Lake Skinner Recreation Area. Camping is available. Passes start at $99.
Mainly Mozart continues its annual All-Star Orchestra event with performances Friday (Beethoven, Mozart and Strauss) at the Baker-Baum Concert Hall, part of the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, and Saturday at the UCSD Epstein Family Amphitheater (Elgar, Mozart and Saint-Saëns). Admission starts at $68 Friday and $26 Saturday. Both shows begin at 7 p.m.

The Switchfoot BRO-AM Foundation’s annual Beach Fest is billed as “more than just a beach day.” The free, family-friendly event opens at 7 a.m. Saturday with surf contests, a live show by the Grammy-winning band, special guests, vendors and green initiatives. What’s a surf joust? Be at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas at 1:30 p.m. to find out. Six local organizations benefitted from the event last year, including Feeding San Diego and Rady Children’s Hospital.
The Black Arts Festival started on Juneteenth and continues Friday at the Diversionary Theatre in University Heights. The event includes a new play series on Friday, the “Lift Every Voice” community showcase on Saturday, and the fest finale, a Gospel Brunch at 11 a.m. Sunday. Individual tickets cost $25 while passes are $80.
A classic and deeply influential hiphop act is coming through town on what’s said to be a farewell tour. The free Carlsbad Art in the Village starts at 10 a.m. Sunday with more than 150 artists – many of them from North County – showing their work.
