Eddie Hearn believes Chris Eubank Jr shouldn’t face a significant punishment by British Boxing Board of Control.
Following his use of a sauna to make the middleweight limit ahead of his unanimous decision win over Benn, Eubank Jr is set to appear before the British Boxing Board of Control at the start of next month.
The governing body will then decide if any disciplinary action is required.
Eubank was handed a £375,000 fine in April, for fractionally exceeding the weight limit set for his grudge match against Benn.
He had shared footage on his social media in which he was seen to be using a sauna, which is currently banned, in order to cut weight.
The 35-year-old has now been ordered to appear in front of the BBBofC to explain his use of the sauna suit.
Matchroom Boxing chairman Hearn told talkSPORT this morning that he believes protocol should be reassessed in boxing as a result of the latest investigation.
“I think, to be honest with you, the board, who I think do a great job, have got to look at the modern day methods that fighters use to make weight,” he said.
“Eubank’s obviously put everything out on social media about how he made the weight. I think one of those was using a sauna or sauna suit.
[Now] he’ll have to go in before the board. It’s happened to me before about seven or eight years ago when I was referring to a fighter that we represented.”
As the landscape in sports is ever changing, Hearn also explained how the regulations that are currently in place for fighters should match this.
“I think to be honest with you, you know, the board needs to get a little bit up to speed and start speaking to experts in the game, how to safely cut weight,” he shared.
Eubank Jr will have his case heard after using a sauna to cut weight to face BennAmid talks for the rematch which is likely be held in September, the restrictions in place for both fighters are something that will be heavily under contention following Eubank’s use of a sauna suit.
Hearn highlighted: “You can’t just be prehistoric and think that fighters don’t cut weight. How do you think they’re going to cut weight for a weigh-in?
“You know, there’s kind of like a code where you’re not allowed to talk about use of a sauna and you’re not supposed to use a sauna or hot baths and stuff like that.
“But at the same time, they also know that fighters drop two, three, four, five pounds in the final 24 hours of a fight.”
The promoter explained how Eubank probably wanted people to see the struggle he faced to meet the weight for the Benn fight, which he won by unanimous decision on April 26 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
He said: “I think Eubank wanted to tell the story about and document it about how he made weight and how tough it was.
Eubank Jr and Benn are likely to meet again later this yearGetty“And it’s probably come back to bite him in the bum a little bit because he’s going to have to go before the board.
“I don’t think it’s going to be anything major, but the board are very focused on the safety and well-being of the fighters, which is very important.
“But fighters cut weight. Yeah. And, you know, obviously they’ve got to try and do it in the safest way possible.”
